    More i-400 photo comparison

Now overlaying the drawing from the Sakaida book, we see some of the same discrepancies from the first photo. Most of the deck features need to be shifted forward. The height of the antenna mast is different. The rudder shape is also a bit different. I've made corrections based on this photo, becuase it is the clearest and I think it is more reliable than the drawing.

      i-400 Baseline drawing

After some basic corrections based on the photo interpretation, and the addition of the cross-section data at hand, we have a more or less complete baseline drawing to start with.

Now the real work begins. We have to make sure the cross-sections are accurately proportioned (they are almost surely not) and then derive the intervening cross sections so that enough bulkheads can be made to form the hull shape.

        Tamiya 1/350 i-400 kit

        Hi guys,

        Tamiya 1/350 i-400 kit

I just got this kit from a guy in Hong Kong. Beautiful kit, of course I would expect nothing less from Tamiya. The 1/48 Seiran kit is also gorgeous. They obviously did thier homework, because both kits are dead-on scale as far as I can tell.

The most useful part of the kit (for me) is the drawings! They are more detailed and accurate than anything I've seen. The largest format drawing is on the cardboard insert that goes in the box to support the trees and hull. Partial scan attached, it was slightly too long to fit in my scanner.

I'm in the process of digitizing (tracing) these drawings. I'm going to use them as a basis for the larger model.

          Updates

I'm going to post updates, but probably not a lot more than that unless someone asks. I'm going to be doing CAD work probably for most of the winter. I'm thinking about having some hull formers cut in a smaller scale (maybe 1/72) to make sure they're right before cutting them at full size.

I just finished tracing the side view from the Tamiya kit. Top view next.

                    Although mine won't be to

Although mine won't be to the high quality and detail that you guys are aiming at, I've begun scratch building an I-400 at 1/72 scale using basic, yet useful plans I bought. It's going to be my first attempt at fibreglass molding and casting so I'm taking my time making the "plug" and will research and add detail to it later.

My plan is to install a couple of Engel piston ballast tanks, preferably 750ml ones. I've got a number of ideas for installing them in cramped WTCs and I can't wait to try some of them......hopefully by the end of the year.

                      Plans; 1/72 model

                      Hi guys,

Unfortunately my CAD drawings aren't in any shape to build from yet. I see that "pier72.com" (didn't see a name) is forging ahead! It will be interesting to see what he comes up with.

I have a few other projects to finish before I can continue with the i-400.

                          i-400 project

This project is on indefinite 'hold' unfortunately. Not for lack of desire on my part, but because my kids entering college has caused me to look to more revenue generating projects in the short-term. I intend to return to it someday, but I can't say when that day will be.

Sorry to hear that but can understand. My sub is on hold but for different reasons.
I have been asked before but for anybody else wanting plans for the I-400 series- and is following this thread, the Kure Museum have detailed plans including interior. They are old xeroxed copies and faded in parts but still good for getting accurate measurements.

Copies are obtainable from the curator but be patient if ordering, it can take a while - weeks.

A look around page 97 will show the other plans in the set available.

                            cheers,

                                Hi Art,

The drawings sound great. When I go to that URL all I get is a blank page. I see the arrow at the bottom. Do you need some kind of special browser or plugin to view it?
