    RC Antenna/Aerials for Subs

    Hi All,

A very silly question from a new sub rc modeller. In viewing many photos and looking through the simply submarines book, I notice no external aerials for the RC receiver. I am currently building Robbe U47 and just wondering how to use an aerial or do you not actually need one?

    Thanks

    Most folks take the antenna

Most folks take the antenna wire from the receiver and run it through the bulkhead of the dive module and into the wet space of the hull. As long as the antenna doesn't get grounded out by water (make sure to seal the end!), it will work fine.

I've even just run the antenna within the dive module itself, but away from the motors and had excellent results.

      Receiver antenna

Hey Jeff, correct me if I`m wrong. Can`t you just wrap the receiver antenna wire around a non metalic item and make sure that you do not overlap each winding of the receiver wire. That way it stays inside the WTC and No extra hole is needed in the WTC and one less chance for leakes ?

Like to know befoer I do that with mine.

      Thanks , George

        A group of us recently

A group of us recently ran our boats in a large chlorinated swimming pool. The boats which wrapped their antennas around a plastic card and stowed them in the WTC tended to lose signal much sooner than those whose antennas were looped within the wet space of the hull. The dry antenna boats had their failsafes blowing at 1.5 - 2 foot depth. Wet antennas (which I was fortunate to have) got down to 3 - 3.5 feet before losing signal.
        Warm regards,

          George,

          That's exactly how I did

          George,

That's exactly how I did the antenna for my OTW Seehund. Works fine!

I should note that Paul is correct in noting that heavily chlorinated pools can cause problems.....as will any water with lots of ions in it. For what it's worth, so far the Seehund has not appeared to be susceptible. The way I ran the antenna was along the top of the dive module and ended up being around 24 inches long when wound around a small tube.
