    need help...

    Guys,

I have completed my Alvin to the point now where it is missing only one last detail.

    Interior of the sail.

I have 3 photos in my collection, two from inside the sphere taken up through the hatch, into the sail area, and one from above at the top of the sail, taken down into the open hatch...

I also have the viking models 1/35 scale resin alvin, which has very rudimentary hatch and interior sail detail...

what I don't have any info on, is what the outside of the closed hatch looks like, with any real detail. I don't even know if the hatch has a little porthole of its own.

Any info anyone can pass on (photos, dimensions of hatch, etc.) would be much appreciated.

    Alvin

    Hei Tim
Gratulations to that wonderfull sub. I had worked also on an Alvin from FX.
You may know it from my website www.diveteq.com.
Did you use the technic that Marc planed on that sub without a divetank ?
Where does these parts that hold the metal from the basket comes from ?

    My best regards
    Carsten

      Carsten,

      Carsten,

yep, in my scouring of the web, I have come across the diveteq website... I think you should finish it if at all possible, the changes made with the current generation of propulsors is definitely light years beyond what I could accomplish.

as to the basket and framework, the framework is a combination of 3/16" aluminum tubing, 7/32" brass tubing tiny hex-head (i think they are #80) brass bolts and nuts, with some of the brackets made out of alumilite. The basket itself is built the same way, except i used 1/8" aluminum instead of the 3/16", and i used nylon window screen for the netting. It was all built from scratch, built to dimensions found on a 3 view i found of the Alvin on the web. I have no idea as to how close to "real" the dimensions are.

On the frame, 180 degree brackets are brass, end point fixtures that make up the triangle are alumilite.

all the bracing that attaches the basket to the frame, and the skidplate to the frame are brass (as well as the skidplate).

On the basket, the 60 degree T brackets are alumilite.

as for how i make its technic, I am not using Marc's recommendations, I have four seperate WTCs, two 3" WTCs for the side thrusters, one 3" WTC for the main motor and electronics, and one 4" WTC for the 500ml Engle piston tank that i use for ballast.

If you have any more questions, let me know, I am happy to answer any I can.

          hi Tim
          thankyou for this

          hi Tim
thankyou for this information about the basket. It looks real good.
Have you got photos from the inside. What is the weight of your Alvin

My next Alvin will be one with the old Thruster setting and i found it great to see your Alvin with the the old thruster setting in the red sail color scheme.
Have you got some more fotos showing the original in this version / color. I think you have one with the alvin on the deck from behind. This shows also the main propeller ring in a different color than the white i found in my book.
You can answer also to my email carsten.heintze@diveteq.com
          Cheers

            I found a construction photo

I found a construction photo of the frame, it gives a much better idea of what is Alumilite, brass, and aluminium tubing.

                the decals are the ones

the decals are the ones recommended by FXModels.

In the Owners manual, they give info on a company called Aeroloft Designs.

I contacted them via email, with an enclosed photo of the specific colors i wanted on the logo and the lettering (lettering on mine is white instead of black, logo is on white circle)

they are a dry transfer decal.

when i ordered them in may of 2005, they were $45.00

Carsten, I think you are asking about this photo?

My assumption would be it is copyright WHOI. I think it came from the WHOI website]www.whoi.edu[/url]

                    Great Alvin

Hey Tim, I was hoping to see you back at the sub regatta in Indy last year or this year. I was looking forward to seeing the boat. I am just now starting mind. If you still need interior shots, the video that was done on (Alan Alda) PBS has about 4 to 5 seconds of the interior of the Turtle, the Alvin sister. If you still need it, I might be able to copy a clip. Send me some photos of the final product. dhampton@ameritech.net

                      Dave, good to hear that

Dave, good to hear that you still have your Alvin... did you keep the cargo box as well?

It was a greek tragedy as to me not going to this years regatta. My boss assumed the regatta would be the last weekend in July, so to be nice he moved his vacation to the middle of August, so I could take the last week of July... by the time the actual regatta dates were published, he already had airline tickets, and hotel rooms booked.

As to the photos I am hunting... What I need are not interior shots of the sphere, but interior shots of the sail. I actually have about 6 photos of the inside of the sail and the inside of the sphere, but they are all with the hatch to the sphere open. None give me info on what the outside of the actual hatch looks like....

                      will get photos off soon
