I am new to submarines, but I would like to know how to make torpedoes and a torpedo launcher like Dave Merriman's model torpedo launcher (if you know of how he built his...). I also would like any other ideas if you have them.
Guys are shying away from offering "torpedo advice" for liability reasons.
For example, you take some toddler's head off whos playing away in the shallow end of the pool with a torp that you are testing, the torp (or missile as it has now become) veers off and explodes (due to an explosive warhead that you are also testing) above the heads of some elderly ladies having tea at pool side, causing one to have a heart attack.
....the first question the lawyers of the families ask is:
"'Who taught you how to build those torpedos ?"
You say, "Mylo".
....next thing you know, I'm served a summons to appear in civil court. Such is the way of the world.
THAT's why you might run into problems getting information. I suggest you just do your best to figure out your own system. Do your own research, the answers are out there.....even if you have to study a bit of engineering and hydrodynamics.
I wanted to find information on Torpedoes as well. But this post has me a bit confused and wondering if you guys are kidding? Has information on making a small motorized tube really become a dangerous topic. I feel bad for the model rocket industry.
motorized fish are not the problem its the ones filled w/ compressed gases that pose the danger.although easier to make the potential for an accident can be a real problem. motorized torpedoes, though much safer are more difficult to build. i can say that from experience. my 1/32 gato has been w/o torpedoes for two years now. i have been working on these but seems as i overcome one problem another arises ! small spaces and weight are issues. but we move on. good luck , neil

Has anyone made a motorized one work? I recall seeing a few pictures here and their but not this is what you need and how to make it work.
True, ...I spoke out of turn for the "world". I should have said, "Such is the world that I have been exposed to here in Canada." There are people just CRAVING to sue people, I think it's what they do for a living.
Didn't mean to stifle positive information exchange, just wanted to enlighten as to some possible hidden dangers. Me personally, if I took a torp to the head because of someone testing, I would be pissed at MYSELF for getting in the way, but that's me.

Mylo
I think if you are responsible you shouldn’t have to worry about the law. Just like you shouldn’t go into a crowed to test out your new baseball bat and ball you should fire a torpedo in a public place. The person giving the information wouldn’t be negligent unless he is showing people how to make something illegal. If that were the case gun companied would get sued all the time for producing something that someone used for murder. If it’s not illegal and you use it in a responsible way you are ok. Civil law or Tort law is met to compensate for negligence. Testing a baseball bat and ball in a large crow and hurting someone is negligence. Hurting someone in a baseball game is an accident.
An exploding torpedo may be a different story and it could be considered a pipe bomb and that is illegal. But I don’t think a gas propelled tube is illegal.
.......I tend to be overdramatic, ....and somewhat of a story teller
Having said that, ask a cigarette co. exec how he felt a few years ago. I still remember that LIAR on the stand saying ...."We didn't know that adding an addictive drug like nicotine would make our product addictive." .....or....of course....everyone's favorite, ....a fast food restaurant getting sued for serving hot coffee. It's all good.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for fully explosive warhead torpedos for our subs, illegal or not, ..... Wooooo Hoooooo !!! Now we're talkin' fun. Anybody comes up with some plans...........get in touch.....secretly.....code name: FAT HEAD.....code name FAT HEAD.

those are called lawyers.
I *really* should start building again...
on the subject : I feel that if people cannot design a gas torp system themselves,
it is bad idea for them to look for a "standard recipe"
for one, because they will not know the safemargins
and tolerances, nor the safety aspect of operating
them.
(as an example : once in a while someone
discovers the CO2 soda cartridges again...)
Hi all!
I have been reading the discussion and as far as I ma concerned I would take on ANY lawyer and prove him to be an idiot. The logic presented is the same as studying nuclear physics. The sharing of knowledge is one thing, application and utilization is different. If there is a lawyer who wishes to take exception, then I would ask does he/she wish a future country full of stupid people?
Electric torpedoes are fine and the biggest problem is the power necessary vs the weight and torque factor. Ther are some designs useing two props, the most practical (and unattractive) is the design with a prop in the nose and in the tail.
Small rocket motor torpedoes or missiles have the problem that they depend upon fire and can easily set fire to unintentional items like your neighbors roof!
Gas torpedoes seem to be the most practical and have their limitations as well. The materials must withstand the pressure of almost 80 psi.
Exploding warheads can be in two basic flavors. First, airsoft guns use a BB size paintball. When the torpedo hits, it leaves harmless paint.
Second is a chemical called "bangsite" or in generic form, calcium carbide. Calcium carbide, mixed with water forms Acetylene gas and with a small spark will cause a loud, harmless bang!
If you have questions and no one will assist, ask and I will. I would much rather have you learn how to be safe and the trade-offs of designs, thoughts, and ideas, than read that you injured yourself from not knowing.
I truely care about all that are here. You are all wonderful people.
