Another Speed controller Question.

Yes Another speed controller questions,

My speed controller ( A cheapie I admit, only forward) makes a bleeping noise. Is this right? (It's my first speed controller) Also It will often cut out well before even getting the propeller to start moving. Sometimes it works well and other times it jusy keeps cutting out. The bleeping starts and then stops. Thats the only feedback i get that theres movement at the station so to speak.

Do all speed controllers Bleep?

Can someone help me on this?

What kind of speed control is it?
Did it come with instructions?
Not all s/c beep.
Some require you too go through a setup process by movbing the stick from 0-100% of travel and some have a dip switch too set and retain the settings.
There are also s/c that are for brushed and brusheless motors.
One controler I used made not a beep but another sound again till I set the range then set the switch.
Contact the manufacturer if you do not have instructions.

It's a brush type speed controller. The motor is simply a cheapie from an electronics store. $10 job.

It did'nt come with instructions. The speed controller works , but just when it wants to . ( the whole cut out thing)

any other advice?

Hi David...you need to supply

Hi David...you need to supply some serious information before anyone can offer help. What your asking is for folks to guess what kind of ESC, motor, and such your using. What is the ESC brand and model, what is it rated for, what kind of voltage are you running, and what is the amps draw? Terms like "it's a cheapie" are of zero help.
I think that I'm saying about the same thing that Rick Teskey did.

It's like the old saying about computers...garbage in, garbage out.

I bought a Graupner Navy V40R, an expensive one even, and..tadaa.. guess what... when ever my engine is not 100% off, it makes noice like I was tearing up cans or something. Really metallic, squeeky noice..
(And yes, I did follow the guide it came with)

It's the MOS-FET transistors working, don't worry. Once it's enclosed in a module, and in the hull, covered in water, and forgotten about, you won't hear it.

Probably the most common

Hi David,

Probably the most common ESC we use at our boat club (SSS in Brisbane) are the "blueys", the Himark HM-50 ESC. You've probably seem then them around - they're in a flat, blue anodized aluminium housing with the top having small heat-sink vanes. As they're so reliable and can take up to 50 amps, we use them for everything from submarines through to our crackerbox speedies. As an added bonus, it comes with a built-in BEC (battery eliminator). They retail for ~$65.

I pulled out my slightly dubious Subtech ESC from my Akula and replaced it with a bluey, and now my sub can go much faster and doesn't cut out anymore. I've got a cheaper, small ESC meant for a car (Futaba MC230CR) in my little Kilo, which works nicely in forward but sometimes doesn't want to go into reverse as it's meant for braking instead. It also beeps when it loses radio signal. I much prefer the blueys, but unfortunately couldn't fit one in the tiny Kilo
