Shaft seals

I know that this has probably been covered countless times but here it goes anyway!!

What are most of you using for shaft seals? the old Grease Box? Lip seals? O rings? packing? A combo of some or all?

I've been thinking of trying to make a grease box type of affair with double lip seals. I know O rings are rated for higher PSI but they would also rob torque from the motor ( i would think any way ) because of higher friction.

I've heard of some subs going down 20+ ft! would that pressure just blow the grease throught the tube and start to leak?

I think that the overwhelming

I think that the overwhelming majority of model subs use SubTech SBS-2 seals, available from Mikes Sub Works ( on the vendor page). They are very inexpensive, easy to obtain, and THEY WORK GREAT.

What kind of depth can we expect this seals to hold out at ?

Beyond that which you want

Beyond that which you want to go. These seals are lip seals, therefore increased water pressure should enable them to seal ever tighter round the the shaft as depth increases.

In short, don't worry about it- other things will cause problems before the seals.

Good way of putting it.

If the shaft seals have let go......the fins and mask would have been on long ago with the search to find the sub due to some OTHER catastrophic failure.

That's all I needed to know.
