Brand new to the world of RC anything :-) Need some help

    Hello all,
I am quite happy, just got my forum account so I can start asking questions and taking notes about the world of R/C Subs (wife wasn't to happy though I am new to this, but I wanted to start off by scratch building a 1/48 scale LA class sub. I know it will take a while, it may be alittle while before I can start, but this gives me time to research. I have going through the internet looking for pictures and trying to find plans for the LA class boats (Particularly SSN-724, the Louisville) I have not really been able to find any drydock photos, maybe because they are still classified (close-up pics anyway) but I wanted to find out if anyone has some info that will help me on my quest for knowledge. When I do start building, I will post my progress in the building forum. I would also like to find some people locally that I may talk to about this, I live in the US in Tennessse, I dont know if there is a SubRon here, but I would like to find other people in TN that enjoy this hobby. Thank you everyone for your time and for posting so many informative posts I hope to continue learning.

      Thanks Michael, you wouldn't happen

Thanks Michael, you wouldn't happen to know how detailed those plans are would you?

        I bought the 1/72 size

I bought the 1/72 size a while back but they're currently over in Ireland with Skaboo so I'm afraid I can't comment. They show a fair amount of detail IIRC. I can almost guarantee that someone else on the board has a set.....Anyone?

          Do you think they could

Do you think they could resize the diagram to 1/48 scale? I want something kinda big...I want working torps (all 4 tubes) and would like to try at least one missile. I also want to make it a static diver I think I am going to try the piston ballast tanks, with a propel emergency blow (or compressed duster air) for a failsafe of for the extra cool stuff like an emergency surface. I know I am going to need quite a few channels, but one thing at a time

            Can't say, worse case is

Can't say, worse case is Greg says no. Even then a trip to the local printing shop and you should be able to get them blown up to the size you need.

I feel I should warn you about starting on such a large project as your first, but I'll leave that to someone else

              Thanks for the warning...http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_smile.gif I

Thanks for the warning... I know it will be a big projet and a long one. The reasons I chose this as a starting project is because I can work on it little by little, so I am not dropping 1k bucks on something right away. I also wanted to do it for my dad, the Louisville was one of his old boats And since I want extras, I need the space inside to put them in. Most of all, I just like a challenge I am always taking stuff apart and putting it back together trying to fix it. now I am going to try and build something. I am also hoping that I might be able to sell some hulls after I make the molds, I havent seen any 1/48 scale LA kits/hulls, maybe it will work. I do appreciate any info on making molds, making hulls out of the molds...etc. Also, when you are making the dive planes and tails and such, do you make those out of wood or foam or what? Thanks for the help Also, do any of you know of any RC submariners that live in Tennesse? thanks.

                Hi,

I suggest you check out Kevin's thread (http://s181686668.onlinehome.us/phpBB2/ ... hp5?t=4691)as he walks you through most of the process and answer your question regarding planes. There's also Steve's (U812) 17B thead and Mylo VIIC thread which will be hitting the mould stage any time now I imagine.

                Cheers,

                  Dennis Deboer used to offer

Dennis Deboer used to offer a 1/48 LA, but ownership of the tooling has changed hands. There will be one available in the future.

Doesn't quite look like they got the hulls for production, last post was 28 Apr 06. I am still trying to find some good detailed pics of the subs, I have been going over www.navsource.org looking for photos on SSN-688 to SSN-724 trying to find some good photos of the deck, conning tower, tail end, etc... still trying to find a good bow shot from the top for more detail on the missle doors. Any extra pics of the LA class boats before they introduced the 688i would be appreciated

Are you talking about making your own radio, or "onboard accessories" like depth or light controllers?

If you're talking depth and light controllers, that depends entirely on what skills you have to bring to the table, and what you mean by "put together"... There aren't too many sub-oriented "electronic gizmo kits" that I've seen, most of the time you're either buying it ready-made or you're starting from scratch. If you really dig, occasionally you'll get lucky and find someone's posted instructions, schematics, source code, and/or PCB artwork to make up a project, but chances are it won't be quite what you need so you'll have to modify what's been done.

I was talking about accessories, but I don't think I will dabble with that to much, I have never put together any electronic boards of any type, I am sure if I had instructions I could put it together. I will go with pre-made boards for right now, until I get more comfortable with the building of the subs thing. I have been browsing through the vendors list and looking at all the electrical stuff, very interesting (and sometimes pricey). It should be fun I am hoping to be able to start the build sometime soon. Still need to find some tools and a place to work, I figure the boat will end up being around 7'5" long and 6" wide. I am not sure how much it will weigh, but I am going to try and keep it light as possible. I will also have to figure out how to transport it, has anyone had any luck in seperating the boat in the middle, and put the bow and stern together when they got ready to launch?

                          Building your own servos and

Building your own servos and radio equipment is possible, but not really worthwhile, unless you want to learn how these things work. Excellent servos and receivers can be purchased for peanuts these days.

However specialised submarine electronics are still worth having a crack at yourself, especially if you have something unusual in mind.

Sonar-ev have a lot of DIY projects in their magazines, but you need to read German to get the best out of your subscription.

Rund um den U-Boot Modellbau engagiert sich der Internationale Modell U-Boot Verein Sonar e.V. mit Treffen, Ausstellungen und der Zeitschrift SONAR.

There's a good project here called Neptune II-

It's a combined depth and pitch controller, has a ballast tank pump controller, water detector, failsafes etc. Well designed board by the looks of it.

You will have to design your own PCB, or build it onto variboard, but all the code is on there for burning the PIC.

With a bit of modification, I think you could use a solid state level sensor instead of the spirit bubble type sensor that Andy Shaw used. This would make the circuit maintenance free.

There is also a schematic and code for a MOSFET based ESC which has a soft start.

There are some good circuits in Norbert Bruggens book Model Submarine Technology. However you need to get the German version of the book for the schematics and PCB artwork. The Traplet publication (english version)has a lot errors in it, and I'm cross that they didn't fix these when they revised the book for republication- an opportunity missed.

Norberts circuits include a piston tank servo control board based on a servo control chip, a pitch and depth regulator (analog based) and a remote switch based on a relay and reed switches.

What would I need to do the programming? What programming language do they usually use? Unfortunately I cant read german, my wife can read a little bit, but not enough to read a technical book. I think I will stick with pre-made parts for right now I should learn how to put them all together first before I try to build my own. Gotta crawl before you can walk right? Thanks for the links and the insight.
