I have a 1/96 scale R/C working model under construction and would like to know if the New book on the I-400 by Henry Sakaida has photographs and drawings showing the finer details of the conning tower. I have most if not all the existing photographs and drawings, but would like to know if the new book is worth while buying?
-What color was the lower hull? In the dry dock photographs I've seen the hull was covered by fouling, so it seems to be a lighter grey than deck casing and superstructures (as shown on the cover of the book) but it could have been originaly red primer.
-Which were the tail codes of the Seirans on I-401?
Hi Pablo, for the I-400 I am going with this colour scheme and the Seiran tail codes.
Depending on what is in Henry's book I may tone down the grey on the upper hull.

Those are outstanding pictures, gantu. I'm ready to paint my 1/350 Tamiya model, and was trying to figure out the colors from the b/w photos in the I-400 book.
Do you know what color was used below the waterline? There are pics of the sub in drydock at Pearl Harbor, but the undersides are totally encrusted with marine growth.
I've actually just begun scratch building the I-400 to 1:72 scale. I'm aiming to build a basic hull in plank-on-frame then have a friend of mine show me how to prepare and make a GRP hull from it.
I've never fibreglassed anything before and I'm really looking forward to the experience.
I'm also planning on this project to take a hell of a long time..............

Did you check the cross sections? On plans by this opportunist they are a different scale to the actual drawing.
See the builders threads the "I-400 giant scale with seirans"

For some reason I lost these excellent posts!
Those color photos of the I-400 are great.
I'm still not sure about the deck color. Maybe it was painted grey and then discolorate to a grey-wood color.
As for the lower hull: seems like IJN subs had a red hull (any good -hystorical- reference on this? ) but a grey/brown color (due to fouling) would also be correct IMO if we want to depict these boats at the end of their short career.
Being the mathematical genius that I'm NOT, I couldn't detect any irregularities with the hull sections (but that don't mean much!!). I've just completed planking the hull and here's a look at her sitting next to one of my Revel Type VIIs, U324. It is really hard to believe that these subs are of the same scale!!!!
It is no wonder that the Seiren flight crews were "........surprised at the overall size of the submarine......".
Now the filling, sanding, filling, sanding, filling, sanding, etc, etc. you get the picture.....
