Thanks for the encouragement Chuck! By the way, I'm only trying to build a model that will pe "perfect" enough to surface!! I'm aware that a cylindrical WTC is the best structurally. However, there is just something about hanging most of the running gear off the end caps that does not quite sit well with me. As far as a flat WTC hatch is concerned, Jim Butt seems to have managed (for the last decade or so) quite well with this design on his Batfish. I would imagine that, given the significantly smaller WTC size, such a design might work even better at 1/72 as opposed to 1/48 scale. Ive discussed various ballast options with Big Dave. He has mentioned that he requires two air bladders to bring his boat up to the proper surfaced WL. He has developed a WTC for the Gato using Lexan cylinders. I was surprised that he required so much air capacity. It turns out that because of the cylindrical design, a substantial amount of his WTC weight winds up above WL. and he needs the extra buoyancy to compensate. By building the WTCs into the hull, I will be able to use the entire width of the hull to accommodate my running gear. Hopefully, I should be able to put substantially more of the weight below the WL. Andy, I don't own a copy of "Submarine Technology" although perhaps I should invest in a copy.
