Building a cone is easy. DIY.

        If it's just a straightforward

If it's just a straightforward cone, and you only want a one-off, then you can use basic sheet metal techniques.

An explaination on how to lay out a cone, and other useful shapes can be found at this link-

You could make the cone from plastic sheet, thin metal sheet i.e. tin plate brass etc.

Lost foam method of construction is simple enough. You basically make your master from foam, less the thickness of glass and resin (say 1/16").

This foam is usually styrene based stuff, i.e. the pink or blue stuff used for home insulation.

Having got your shape you then skin it with resin and glass fibre matt, a final layer of glass fibre tissue will help smooth things out.

When the resin/glass has cured, you dig the foam out, or melt it out using cellulose thinners (be warned this can get very messy).

The thinners won't attack the glass and resin, so you'll be left with a hollow cone- hence 'LOST' foam.

The outside of the cone will be a little rough, but you can build this up with either top coat resin or polyester filler (bondo) and sand back until you get a smooth finish.

A point to mention relating to resins. if you use epoxy resins, you can lay-up directly onto the foam with no problem. If you use polyester resin, then you must create a barrier of some sort, other wise the styrene products in the resin will melt the foam and you'll be left with a limp, sodden and (expensive) mess.

The 'barrier' can be as simple as an oil based paint, although many folk coat the foam in PVA.

            I'm building two little subs

I'm building two little subs which I nicknamed Chubbysubs.

They're based on the Kitteridge K250 one man subs.

I posted a thread over on Subpirates. Progress has been slow of late, as I've been teaching myself how to program PIC microcontrollers so I can make some mixers for the pod thrusters.

              Are you crazy!

              Stephan,

Your supposed to be getting the Patric Henry and the Typhoon ready for sea duty, Now I hear you want to build a DSRV of some sort? Are you independantly wealthy? Don't you work like the rest of us?

Just Kidding! I would like a neat submersabile like Matt Mungers little DSRV but I can't seem to get the time or right sized tubeing.

Oh, Well I'll just work on the new Gato boat from Revell and the USS Black Cat, ooops I mean my marlin kit....

              Respectfully,

              Charlie

my typhoon is layed up for a while... got to do a lot of changes to it...

my revell VII-C will be the next one to be finnished before the typhoon

currently i was getting my scratchbuilt tug ready for the christmas light parade..

and the rov.. well my wife seen davids rov and realy liked it.. so she wants me to built her one... preferably cheap... so i think scratchbuilding with lowes supply's
