type II u-boat project by Jeff Jones

    hey Guys,
here is my type II scratch built u-boat, I know its been around a while, but these are photos I never posted. The boat fires one scratch built torpedo, has an APC 3, the rudder , dive planes, net cutter, anchor,, are made of scrap aluminum. The wires "jumper cables" are lead test line, for control line model airplanes. The deck is .040 styrene, the motors I picked up at a swap meet for 50 cents each, The boat is built with lexan bulkheads, and runs on a 12 volt 7 amp batt. that is actually built in the center ballast tank which use's propel. The deck gun is scratch built from brass tubing. It also has a subtech fail safe. The upper hull lifts off and is held on with a single screw that goes through the deck at the very aft end. The model took 1 1/2 years to build and is the 3rd type II hull in 1/32nd scale I built and the only one I built through to a working model. I had also built a 1/24th scale type II hull, thats in the basement on the to do list... thanks Jeff Jones P.S. one last note, when I had all the foam parts cut and shaped, I glued them all together over a large piece of glass to keep it flat and straight. I used a glass top off of an old pinball machine. When I glued the 2 hull half's together in foam, everything lined up perfectly.

    Jeff,

    Very nicely done! Excellent work.

    Jeff,

Very nicely done! Excellent work. I particularly like the way you milled out the deck slots.

(Also glad to see that you've gotten the photos uploaded.)

Even though I have not seen this sub in person (yet), this is the model that inspired me to look into a 1/32nd Type II of my own. Hopefully in the not-to-distant future we can run our own wolfpack.

      Thanks Jeff,
The deck is taped on the wooden piece with 2 sided carpet tape to hold it while its being cut, You really have to be careful, one mistake and the whole piece is scrap! I cut the deck into 4 parts and filled in the gaps with spot putty. The water tight areas have a few thousand screws holding them on, stainless with brass nut, If I remember right they are 4/40's. I will post an interior shot with the ballast tank lid open so you can see how the large 12 volt batt sits inside, its a tight fit. The hull is not cut at the water line but higher where the side structure would go up to the deck, doing this made the openings even narrower than if the cut would of been at the water line. But I think it gave it an over all better look. I used exacto razor saw blades to cut the hull, it gives you a very thin line, but it will eat these blades fast, and they are about 6 buck each.. eee gads! The conning tower was made using a foam plug also. If you decide to make a hull this way and use the laytex paint to protect the foam, you can soak it in warm water when you are done removing the foam to get the laytex paint out of the inside of the hull. Good luck, and thanks.

        Jeff,

Fantastic ! I really like those type IIs. If you've got more pics, please post them here.

I shot showing the boat's scale size would be nice too, maybe of you holding it or something.

        Thanks again for the post.
