Latest Project ROV Style static diver - 1st build online

Being in the proverbial bush for too long just watching and learning, now it's time to get some opinions on my build. I have been building R/C boats for many years (too many to want to count), my last sub was a dynamic diving shark fin that was fun for the beach and hobby shows. My latest project for the upcoming Toronto Hobby Show is this Static diving ROV style critter.Here is the first pic, if anyone wants to see the rest let me know.

Here are 2 views of the stern section made using the lost foam method, a piece of 2" polycarb tubing for the nozzle and 1/8" sheet ABS.




The Dive plane and rudder aslo made from 1/8" ABS unprimed.

Now for the fun/interesting stuff,

Now for the fun/interesting stuff, for my WTC I decided to use 3" Polycarbonate tubing with a PVC end Cap and Brass rods to hold the drive and electronics. The end plate was glued using a solvent cement then Marine Goop to make sure there were no leaks, excellent stuff that Goop, works great as a sealant everywhere.


The nice thing about Polycarbonate is the way it can be drilled, tapped and screwed, Can't do that easily with acrylic!
Infact it's so easy to work I used it on all of the WTC insert.



The drive system is made from Polycarbonate sheet with aluminum stand offs, a 385 motor and belt drive components fron "Stock Drive Products" (Which is also a great place to get Universal joints at half the price of those "Hobby" ones)



For the Electronics I am using Hitec HS225BB servos, An air pump from Dave Welch with a 6volt Clippard valve and...



a Subtech SES-3 switch. The Receiver is a JR 7 channel on 75Mhz with a Black Kat Antenna. The ESC is an Aristocraft/Sanwa ES-01 made for those micro cars using a 400 size motor.




Last thing in the WTC is a 2.4ghz wireless camera that I am thinking of running from it's own 9volt Battery mounted above the motor with a simple external switch. These cameras tend to draw quite a bit of current and I will be only using it occasionally during the shows.



Looking at the WTC there should be still enough room for the 9volt alkaline battery and the LiPo saver for the next part... the Power source.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know, the Hobby show is coming up on the 3rd to 5th of November and I hope to have this ready. There should be just enough time to finish this beast barring any complications.

In the club I belong to there are some excellent modelers, we even have one that built a pair of torpedo's don't know the scale but they were slightly larger in Diameter than a "AAA" Battery and had powered counter rotating props. #### I just try to do my best and have fun doing it! Even though I have the milling machine and lathe don't think I would ever attempt to make gears that small.

I should think you will need quite a bit of ballast. I assume that will go in the legs?

Only have one other model I could show here, my R/C Shark Fin (dynamic sub with lots 'o' power). The rest of my models are surface types maybe I will post them in R/C Groups. As for the Canadian source, didn't find one yet... but Big Dave Welch is excellent at getting those parts out to you.

The WTC has an outside Diameter of 3" and the hull has a 4" inside diameter which should give me JUST enough room for the bladder to expand. After all if the model is just a slight bit negative buoyant very little air in the bladder is all that is necessary.

The legs are going to get all the lead shot for balast... after I put in my Ultra Bright LED's in the end caps (Where the holes are in the photo's)

Hit a snag this morning, was testing the radio equipt out and it turns out the motor I had for the belt drive was too weak so I had to tear the WTC apart and replace it with a stronger motor. Well back to the grindstone!

Colour scheme is reminiscent of the Lockheed Deep Quest.

For some reason though something about shape keeps reminding me of the Starship Enterprise (TOS).
