    Protecting Elec

Hello all its me again with another question. I just ordered a Speed controller and leveler from Atomic subs and tring to figure out how to protect them better. I read that some people heat shrinked them and think that is the best. So any advice and maybe some points in the right direction to get the heat shrink and some good technices to use would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance..

    Heatshrink is available from most

Heatshrink is available from most electronic supply places.

I get it at radio fairs, where it's cheap, but if you don't have them where you are, you could try mousers.com, or radioshack etc.

I usually put a slip of thin plastic underneath the board traces before I cover with heatshrink- I've found some of it is conductive and can cause problems.

Chose a diameter that slides over the circuit easily. Not too easily mind, otherwise it won't shrink down adequately.

I'd recommend practicing on a stick or something unimportant first. The technique is easy, but you need to be careful of using too much or too little heat.

Cut a piece off and leave a generous amount either side. I use a paint stripping gun to heat it up, you can also use a small blow lamp, but you need to be careful. Just waft it past the heatshrink (like blow drying hair), you'll soon see it start to shrink. Whatever you do don't train it on the circuit as if you were heating it up to solder or temper it.

Work from the middle outwards to either end, when you start to see the components through the heatshrink, stop.

Let it cool down for a minute or two and then snip the ends to size. Job done.

      Has anybody ever tried the

Has anybody ever tried the Brush-On Liquid Electrical Tape for this little job.I`ve used it to seal small leaks and such.It comes off very easy and does the same thing. It is very cheap and easy to work with, and you can get it in different colors. It is made by North American Oil Company and you can by it in any auto parts store.

        I use clear shrink tubing

I use clear shrink tubing on my electronics. Once it's shrunk, it is easy to trim around the adjustment pots. Using heat shrink is not to waterproof the electronics, it is to protect the circuts as most 2 sided tape used for attachment is semi conductive and will short out our expensive units. I use 1 1/2" clear, got mine through Tower Hobbies.
