What to expect...conversion cost Type VIIc sub

Thinking of doing a Revell Type VII C 1/72 conversion for r/c.
What kind of total expense (minus the cost of the model itself)can I expect by the time its done? Thanks.

Depends how much of the work you are prepared to do yourself.

If you want a kit then here are two options-

Add about $150 for RC, batteries and motors etc.

I am astomisihed by the numbers being thrown around regarding the cost of converting the Revell kit. I've been running subs since the late 1970's, and if you shop prudently, and do a lot of the work for yourself, rather than buying it "ready made", you should be able to do it for about three hundred bucks, box to water. It doesn't cost an arm and a leg to build a plastic model kit, and make it run and dive. You don't need a machine shop or a radio system that can control the space shuttle, you can do it for a lot less money and effort, with equal results. This isn't brain surgery, it's just a hobby.

I won't argue the point on the other items, but I know those items can be purchased for a lot less, especially now.

A TX can be had for under £25, a receiver for about a tenner, so that's £35 for the radio ($70). Micro servos are now under a fiver each, and small motors are very cheap to source (surplus buhlers are nice), I'd say £15 would have it all covered ($30).

ESC's are really cheap if you know where to look. I'd say £20-30 with failsafe ($60).

Good li-pos can be had for under a tenner.

                  A legal surface freq. radio

A legal surface freq. radio with at least 4 channels? Not a new one for that price! a Polk 6 channel is $188.00 and there is not much else to pick from. The car radios only have 2 channels & the rest are a/c freq.

                    I've just bought a 4

I've just bought a 4 channel Hitec Flash 40mHz off Ebay for £58 inc shipping ( about $110 ) only thing I need for it is a 4 channel reciever as the original one got soaked and packed up and i'm getting a 3 channel one with the TX ( which is fine by me as i've got a Hitec Ranger 2 3 channel 40mhz Tx already for my R/C surface models - or targets ).

I have looked around Ebay and can get the Revel 1/72nd VIIc ( and VIIc/41 ) for about £45 delivered ( $90 roughly ) and the Lexal pipes for building your own WTC's are not very expensive ( about £14 per meter in 38mm,50mm & 70mm O/D by 3mm thick + shipping ) as you could buy 3 different sizes and get 3 or 4 WTC's out of the pipes. As for cap ends , looks like i'll be trying to get a mate of mine at the local college to turn mine on their lathe's which are CNC thank feck.

It can be done cheaply , BUT , i'm considering ordering BigDaves WTC for the Seawolf kit i've got just so I can see how thats done to give me insight before designing my own one.

                      I spent a little more

I spent a little more than Bob for my radio,a lot more for the battery"lit/ion" and charger, paid for my ECS,Subsafe, and airpump for the ballast system. And I paid more for the sub kit than he did,the brass props and shafts were more expensive,in addition to the u-joint kit and the brass deck and detailing kit for the hull have to be included.Ithink that what I spent for my boat was not that far out of line as some people tend to think.I don`t have all the resources available to me as some people,so I have to pay a little more,no big thing.

Dave, as you may have noticed, me seehund leaks, servos wet more often than not, also the receiver. open them up, let them dry and i have had no problem.
may be teeching you to suck eggs but put the receiver in a balloon, cable tie the end, twice, and problem soved, get it as wet as you like.
also Maplin do a cleaner for electronics, also helps.

Unless the Polk 8 can use 27Mhz AM or 40Mhz AM or FM then we can't use it over in the UK. Sucks being over here sometimes I can tell you !!
