1/72 Typhoon building thread - finally got the time

hi guys... i finally have the time to work on my building thread..



i have been working on the boat off and on , but due to the bad health of my wife , a very tight money situation and working a lot of overtime (to cover doctor bills) it takes a long time and i have to improvise a lot.

i bought the hull 1 year ago from allan pew models in Australia... great model .(high shipping though )
first i made the necessary cuts for the hull haves and did the glass work. i re-shaped the tail end to specs and photos i received from wayne frey.. (thanks wayne). i also attached the coning tower. then i had a couple month of cutting and filing flodding holes. those received screen on the back to keep dirt out and it looks pretty realistic.
in the meantime i ordered to propps, which were made by steve nuttall.. (thanks steve)










im open to any comments and advice... positive and negative

after allignment of the sails

after allignment of the sails i started working on the fwd diveplane mechanism... i think it will work ok... i just got to come up with an solution of securing it into the boat.






here a picture of the bottom of my hull. i sandet it and primered it with a marine etching primer for gelcoats, since the bottom is going to be painted with trinidat biocide bottom paint..

i have painted the bottom in red (trinidat) and the topsides in flat black with outboard paint.. i'm very satisfied with the paint..

i also did some detailing

in the last 6 month i had to re-design my rear sails a couple of times, but they are ok now..

ohh. for those who wonder: the shafts are both 1/4 inch , with ballbearings. shaft tube has grease fittings.
as coupler i use octura flex ferrules and 1/4 inch flexshaft (from my wifes weedeater )
one flex-ferrule is for 1/4 inch the other i turned out to 5/16th for the motor-shaft, (directdrive)

you will need to think about some device to get the boat to and in the water. and out of it, when it is full of water...
I think two hands will not be enough, unless you have a slipway at the place you want to sail.
I have seen pictures of a small elevator type thingy to get large
WW-2 boats in and out, you might need something like it.

also, you might need some maneuverability assistance.
True to scale maneuverability might not be enough as you will probably sail close to shore (we like the public to be wowed..). adding some thrusters seems required (or a matching tugboat ).

and the last remark : since your boat is so large, lighting would fit easily. consider adding a few led's.

actually so far the only

actually so far the only thing i did with them doors is the following.... i made / bend / shaped a piece of flat brass to the exact size of the hole. i then installed hinges... and i move the door by hand.. i will work on that this weekend ( i hope) and make some photos

Be sure your wife's weedeater

Be sure your wife's weedeater cable isn't the twisted spring type. It will work fine in one direction, but in the other, under torque, it can unravel.

PS - hope the weeds don't get too bad for your wife. Kneeling down to snip them with a hand shears can be rough on the knees!

you had me going there for a minute.. had to look at the cable... it is a heavy duty from a john deere commercial type cutter. it is double twisted in opposite directions.

i have been running the same cable in my raceboat for a while with a lot of torque. i think, it can handle the sub...
140000series pitman(24Volt) running on 12 volt with 3 inch 7 bladed propps...
