Type IXC - A flame rekindled

    Hello all,

After many years of lying dormant, an interest - or should I say obsession - in RC subs, in particular the type IX U-boat, has been rekindled.

It all began 29 years ago when, in the April 1979 issue of Flying Models magazine, an article on a scratch built type IXC appeared. Although a rather thorough article I realized at the time it was way beyond my capabilities. Being an airplane modeler I decided to be patient and read/research what I could find on the subject of RC submarines and wait, hopefully for a kit to become readily available. My patience was rewarded a couple of years later in a type IXC from Akins Scale Models in Minneapolis, Minnesota which I quickly purchased and anxiously awaited to arrive. Upon opening the kit I quickly realized, after examining the plans and instructions, that there was still a lot of gray areas that would have to be researched and lots of engineering problems resolved. Being then in my early 20’s life got really busy/complicated with careers, marriage and all the other usual obstacles one encounters when just getting started down the road of life.

Fast forward to today. Now 47, older and hopefully a little wiser the urge to try this once more has come into to play. Now with the advent of the Internet and great web sites like the SubCommittee, I feel fairly confident I may finally get this itch scratched. I clambered around in the attic a couple of evenings ago and drug out the long packed away Akins kits and began planning my attack. I also intend on joining the SubCommittee in the very near future and hopefully attending the SubRegatta 2006 this July.

So, with this said I’m looking forward to corresponding with you guys and hopefully will not become too much of a pest with all the questions I will inevitably have. And speaking of questions, does any one know where I can find a good set of scale line drawings for the type IX? I’ve searched the net quite extensively and have had no luck what so ever.

    Hello Jeff,

    Hello Jeff,

I love the Type IX and VII subs.

Sorry I don't have any detailed Type IX drawings to share. But just wanted to say hello and let you know that I'm just getting started in subs too after a long state of RC hibernation. In my case it was 1/10 and 1/8 scale offroad racing some 15 yrs ago.

I'm looking into some nice quality entry-level sub kits now and I just sent my membership in and ordered a new 8ch FM radio.

In my case, I wanted to build a nice later-war Type VIIc, no net cutter (all the VIIC's I see look like VIIB's) , and I'm iffy on the deck gun... but probably will include it. I thought it best to get a quick-build kit first to play with while I slowly work on the VIIc in the background.

Hmmmm... but ya know, the Type IX is a cool sub. Being in Florida and having read stories of Type IX's patrolling and sinking ships off the coast; I have to admit it's appealing. And I haven't bought the VIIc model yet... hmmmm...

      I just like WWII U-boats,

I just like WWII U-boats, both VII's and IX's. Though Early British & French boats are really appealing too, but for now I'm going to focus on type IX's. Engel has a really nice, or at least it looks so on their web page, type IX. Although a little expensive, I'm not sure in the long run it wouldn't be cheaper to purchase such a kit which already has most every thing you need included, not to mention the engineering already done. I must admit I've always been a kit man at heart. Speaking of Engel. Has any one out there had any experience with the their type IX?

        I have not built Engel's

I have not built Engel's Type IX, but can attest to the quality and service that Engel provides. Yes, they cost more than other sub kits, but are quite complete, so relatively speaking, the costs somewhat balance out. I don't think you would want to tackle a boat along the lines of a Type IX as a 'first boat'. Try a SWM kit, D&E Skipjack, or a Subtech Albacore first. Good luck guys!

            Thanks Gantu, located a copy

Thanks Gantu, located a copy at Amazon and placed an order this morning.

And Mike of course your right although I've been a model builder since the age of 5, building everything from 1/72 scale aircraft to 1/4 RC, if modeling has taught me anything I know you gott'a crawl before you walk & walk before you run, to coin an old phrase.

Thanks for the reply guys I really appreciate your thoughts, input & suggestions.

                Jeff,

                If you make it to

                Jeff,

If you make it to Carmel all the way from Knoxville for the SubRegatta, you might consider traveling just a little further to see a real Type IXC. A bunch of us from SubRon 8 are driving up to Chicago Monday morning to visit the newly restored U-505 after the regatta. I'm sure you would be welcome to join us.

                  That would be great George,

That would be great George, but unfortunately my work schedule here in Knoxville will prevent me from joining you guys. I was lucky enough thought to visit U-505 several years ago when she was on display in her former location. As I would like to see her in the new digs, how about taking some pictures and posting them here when you get back?
