another battery question

I am rc-ing an academy german u-boat IXB and need some advice on what kind of battery to use. It will be powering a 280 motor, a Futaba rx, Proboat ESC, and two Hitec micro servos. I'd like decent run times, but I don't have a lot of space. To give you an idea of the space I do have, I can stack 4 AA batteries in the forward compartment in this configuration]

    Sounds similar to my Kilo

Sounds similar to my Kilo - it's running a Speed 280 (geared down 2]http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_biggrin.gif[/img] So I'd suggest a 7.2v NiMH pack, which will run everything in your sub fine. This requires 6 cells, as they're 1.2v each - hope you can squeeze these in.

I've got 6xAA 2300 mAh NiMH cells configured in a cylinder in the front of my little Kilo. I've managed to run it for ~3h, and the batteries were still going strong, so I'm as yet unsure how long they'll last! But yes, the higher the mAh rating, the longer they'll go for. I've now seen 2500mAh NiMH AA's for reasonable prices, so they'd probably do you well (assuming they fit).

There are 900mAH AAA NiMH cells which are quite small, but would seriously drop your runtime. Then again, my big(ish) Akula has a NiCAD 1300mAH pack which I get 3.5 hours from. The motor is approx 280-sized, but again it's geared down to reduce its power usage and thus prolong runtime.

    Choices, choices!

      hey, thanks for replying. your

hey, thanks for replying. your info was really helpful. I do have a tiny little sub. the battery compartment is about 2.25"x1.5"x1.25", so I have almost no space to work with. If you wouldn't mind looking, this is what I've found on e-bay]E-bay Battery Auction

I guess having learned what I did from your post, my only question is would I be getting ripped off If I bought these?
