I recently saw a Revell 1/200 Lafayette Class SSBN kit at a local hobby shop and i was wondering if anyone out there has tried doing an RC conversion on this model. The model is design to be built with half-open hull to show off internal detail.

I've been following your building thread closely, can't wait to see the finished product. How about a Ohio boomer in the same scale as a future build. I'd sure like to have one. Migt even try building one using your technique. Do you know where I could get hull plans/ drawings.

I am surprised with your comments about the Andrew Jackson kit. Normally Revell AG seem to be pretty good with their accuracy. I understand given this cut has a cutaway it may not be a 100%.
It is definitely not up to the standard of your GW though.
Well to be honest I haven't seen this kit. Thought it might be the old cut away version with the interior. The box art looks promising. Any pictures of her Byron?

First, the kit was not produced by Revell AG. This Revell kit was originally issued by the Renwal Co. in the early 1960’s. At the time, very little was known about the details of the Polaris subs; so they guessed. The 24 inch long kit was an interior cutaway model, which was issued in three distinct versions (George Washington, Ethan Allen, & Thomas Jefferson). Revell USA issued its’ own version of the Polaris sub cutaway, which was smaller and more rudimentary in detail than the Renwal kit. In fact, the Revell kit initially only had 8 missile tubes and was subsequently corrected to 16! When the Renwal Co. (Mineola, NY & Fairless Hills, Pa) folded in the 1970’s, Revell (USA not AG) acquired the molds for the Polaris submarine kit and issued the Ethan Allen kit as the Andrew Jackson. Never mind that the Ethan Allen and Jackson were two different classes of submarine with different lengths. The kit was again reissued in 2004 by Revell.
The interior is way off in accuracy. While somewhat better, the exterior has many major corrections that need to be made, most notably the rudders and sternplanes. The sail also needs significant work, as do sections of the hull. Topside detail needs to be redone. Ken Hart wrote an article many years ago in the SCR correcting the kit into an exterior only static model. He rated the result as passable only. It doesn’t even approach 100% in terms of overall accuracy; but you can pick up a kit for around $20.
