    Acrylic glues.

    G'day,

This ones probably mostly for the Aussies out there.

I build my WTC's out of Acrylic often referred to as "Perspex". With my last one i used a really good solvent glue that I can't seem to get anymore.

I looked in BBC / Bunnings hardware the other day and saw lots of glues that claimed to glue to "Most plastics" Does anyone know of a good glue that really glues Acrylic very effectively?

It isn't th easiest stuff to bond well....

    regards,

      Hi David,

      The WTC tube in

      Hi David,

The WTC tube in my Kilo is acrylic (from Jim R.) and I've used 2 different adhesives on it. For securing my WTC tray guides down the length of it, I just used thin CYA glue. So far this has held well (touch wood), but does have the disadvantage in that if it runs where you don't want it to go, attempting to wipe the excess off makes a nasty smudge on your nice clear WTC Maybe a polishing disk on a dremel would get it off though - I'll give this a shot sometime.

For seals, I've used silicone sealant from Bunnings as discussed in another thread. It's &#^$! sticky and aesthetically not the greatest, but does do a wonderful job making watertight joins, eg. to my endcaps and around other hull penetrations. It seems to grip the acrylic pretty well, though I did rough up the area I used it on a little (but you can't see this under the silicon).

Have you tried Humbrol "Liquid Poly"? Unlike the other two I mentioned, it is a solvent glue like you were asking for, and can be had from lots of hobby stores. I admit I haven't tried it on acrylic yet, but it works very well on styrene. Its advantage over CYA is that it doesn't make the plastic brittle, so is good for gluing curved strips. I'll have to test this on some spare acrylic tube sometime ...

        Hi David,

        I'm not sure what

        Hi David,

I'm not sure what you're going to be gluing to your acrylic, but I've just tried using some Humbrol "Liquid Poly" on a thin piece of styrene (which dissolves nicely in it) and it's now stuck quite well to an offcut from my Kilo's WTC $6 from Toyworld for a 28mL bottle.

Hope it'll do what you need!
