    Motors and Sealing for deep water applications

    Hi, Im looking for some ideas or direction. I am builidng a uuv for depths up to 200 feet in freshwater and I am running into problems trying to find a motor that is not really expensive or a sealing method for the shafts that do not take up a lot of space axially. If you have any ideas on what type of motor to look for or sealing for the propeller shaft, please let me know.

    I recommend you try ROV

    I recommend you try ROV forums. They have people who do this kind of thing for a living.

      I am not sure, but

      I am not sure, but I think I have read where some folks fill the motors with non-conducting fluid (oil?).

        yep.

        a fluid like oil

        yep.

        a fluid like oil withstands the pressure much better than air,
        since it is not compressible either. therefore the mechanics do not have to bear the load, but the oil does.

        but our contraptions only go about 10 feet deep, so we really do not have the hands on experience here. our subs are not normally oil filled.

        @michael Hims,
        please post an URL of such a ROV forum if you know one.

          The most common oil used is mineral oil.

          That's the only one I remember, but there are others out there...
