    First Patrol Log

    THE SETTING,
The pond where I go is beside and owned by the local hobby shop out in the country about 3mi. from the house. The pond sets on the south side of the building about 40 yards from the highway and is 5 ft. deep in the center.Yesterday was a beautiful day but cold, about 40 degrees.

After running up and down the pond in shallow water a few times, the rudder jammed hard over to the starboard side and U-407 was headed for deep water at standard speed .After ordering slow ahead and checking damage control.ALARM,ALARM,ROCKIT ATTACK,PULL THE PLUG, FLANK SPEED, TAKE HER DEEP.After loosing control of the crash dive due to flooding in the WTC,she drove her nose into the bottom at flank speed "5 ft."After about 5 min. the subsafe brought her back to the surface with an emergency blow.It took forever to get her into shallow water with a bad list forward and very little rudder and speed control. As she approached shallow water I could see she was down forward about 2 in.Had to get wet and cold, cold, cold to fetch her up.Turns out that the hobby shop guy was giving a demonstration of model rockitry and launched 3 rockits in the front of the building. They all landed within 3ft. of U-407`s position.
    Damage
Massive deck and c/t damage due to Emergency blow and expansion of ballast chamber under the deck, loss of 1 motor, possibly electronic components due to flooding of WTC,rudder linkage, outer hull damage, and mud in all 4 torpedo tubes forward Real good first patrol"huh"
