      Lothar,

Yes, I am building this one as a lost foam. As for the sanding and filling, It was recommended to me to preen it now while I could get the major imperfections out such as sharp edges, major bumps and runs of resin. The filler I intend to use is will be a mixture of resin and glass bubbles so there really isn't going to be too much of a material difference. I don't think so anyway, I may be way out in left field and please correct me if I am wrong.

As for the color, I was starting to sand at "ghosts" in the glass. It seemed like I was seeing things that weren't there and that I was missing other important imperfections. With the color on I can clearly see now where I have to do some work. I hope it doesn't affect the next layers of cloth too badly. hopefully not at all!

Thanks very much for you're comments! I appreciate the feedback!

        Hi Dan,

to use a resin-glass-bubble mix is better than normal filler. I didn't know this. Think it will work.

Some progress made in the past few weeks.

I have made up a several batches of resin and glass bubbles and laid it down on different sections of the hull. I let each section cure & got to work sanding and have started to get things nice and smooth. It's been interesting though, spread a little here and there.. wait for cureing.... sand... repeat... it's taken time but it's looking really good! Interesting thing though - Either the resin picked up the small bits of paint dust from sanding or it reacted with the paint in general because it turned a lighter shade of red in parts... didn't have any real effect on anything, just thought it interesting that it turned color.

These pics bring me upto about friday of this past weekend.

              Progress continues.....

This weekend turned out to be quite productive. I managed to get most of what I wanted done which was more laying of more filler and sanding. I think I'm now to the point where I will sand one more time and then I'm off the races with my final layers of glass. Then onto more a little more preening and then a final sanding and priming before doing the gutting(of foam), equipment installation & detailing. At least I believe I'm to that point. If not please correct me.

Anyway, here are a few pics from this weekends progress. Very similar pictures to the my previous post only I've focused on the other side of the sub now. I can only do one side at a time really. My workspace is quite limited and leaves much to be desired in the way of accessing my model from more than one edge of the table.

and the work keeps going.... stay tuned....

So after All of the sanding and filling and sanding and filling........ I decided to give it one more shot of primer before I put on the last two layers of glass. That will come hopefully really soon.... not this coming weekend... maybe next.... I have yet to purchase the 10 oz. cloth yet and get some other things.

So this is where I am as of last night. This build seems to be pretty slow... it is.. but things look like they're on target for having the foam core out by the end of Jan/1st week in Feb. I hope to have most everything complete by the end of Feb/mid-March.

                  Progress Continues......

So I have one or two layers of resin to lay on yet so I can wet sand it and get it smooth and then I'll start workign with the minor (some major) areas that I have to fill and smooth out. then I will prime and start working with paneling details and some other ideas that I have. I will also work on removing the foam core and cutting away my access panel. I'm really interested to see how much room I have inside and how I am going to arrange everything.

                    Progress continues.....

                        Thanks Kevin,

I appreciate the advice and I will definitly consider it. I don't own a palm sander but I'll consider getting one. Sanding for me by hand has been a nightmare. hours upon hours... I'm not complaing, don't get me wrong but still.... yikes. and the worst part is that I can't ever get the seams to truly go smooth. Those and the little bumps and lumps you don't see in the pictures. To be honest there are so many flaws in the glass that all of my lines are shot. I've been trying to salvage them but it doesn't seem to be going that well. I'm trying however. I won't give up.

                        Again, thanks for your advice.

                              Pictures galore!

I picked up my hull last night from the my parents place. Before I left there I gave it a quick shot of white primer on the inside to make it all uniform in color. I couldn't stand seeing all the "imperfections" shown in full color. So seeing it all white made everything kinda go away. Now all I see is little bumps and lumps and they don't bother me so much. My wife says I have an OCD perfectionist complex but meh... doesn't bother me none.. he he...

Anyway, I took it home and took some pictures with the hull empty and with some of the parts in their future locations. I couldn't help myself. I had to see what it looked like and how much room I would end up with in the end. There's quite a bit and for many I think you'll find that to be an understatement.

So now that I am looking to start building I went out and pick up the material I am going to use for my ribs and supports on the inside. It's a product called Sintra. Bob (Bob the Builder) led me onto this product as he uses it in his Nautilus and to me seemed like a great product all around. it's a PVC foamboard that's very versatile. Cut, sand, flex, laminate, shape, do what you want to it. I found my supplier to be a local sign making shop. I bought a whole bunch of off-cuts in 3mm and 2mm thicknesses. I think from there I can do almost anything I want. I intend to laminate some sheets together to get some additional strength for the ribs. I intend to use it for the jet ports and so much more... here's to the imagination I guess.

Anyway, I found this website that explains a little about it and what you can all do with it. ( http://www.solarbotics.net/starting/...07_sintra.html ) I've found it to be quite interesting.

here's a pic of my stacks of off-cuts. (the tea light candle is for scale - pieces are about 9 - 12" long)
