This version of the Type XXIII was modeled after the HAI and HECHT, which was post WWII. Mike Dory and a few other folks have turned out very nice versions of this model. However, since it is ABS, you will have some serious work to do on the seams to get them nice and even. Another thing that is unfortunate is that the linkages for the stern are external on the model.
First thing I would do would be to tear out the inner ballast compartment and use a D&E WTC3. (Be careful, the walls of the model may give before the adhesive does.)
I'm guessing that you probably don't need the forward planes on this size model, so four channels should suffice.
