    Thanks to all for your

Thanks to all for your input on this one, I am taking all comments on board and following up leads etc. The lesson seems to be to treat all "evidence" with a certain amount of suspicion, even if it has Russian lettering on it.

The photos I have seen, both of models and full size (allowing for perspective) to me appear to show a parallel centre section... but I remain open minded. I think the shadow in the dry dock photo emphasises the curve of the deck casing.

I am not an absolute stickler for scale accuracy in what will be a working model - and one that will have to operate in a murky rock-infested lake - but would just like to get the basic shape fairly correct. I can still sleep at night (if a little fitfully) with the wrong number of bars in my intake grilles. (-?)

There are certainly some magnificent models to be seen at the German (and other European) meetings! They clearly indulge their passion for fine engineering. I can accept that they have the necessary skills (and the money) but it beats me how they find the time to produce these models.

    Yabbie,
I agree with your point of view regarding a working model but I think that the topic on the hull shape is interesting nevertheless.

I'm still not convinced by the "parallel centre" in the case of the Kilo. It's easier for making a model but I don't think the real sub has that shape at all.

    As for the shadows]http://www.sinodefence.com/navy/sub/kilo.asp[/url]

"The submarines features a water-drop shape double hull with a T-shape stern rudder and a single large shaft. "

      Gerwalk,

Point taken regarding the shadow, you are quite correct. It could be that the hull has a subtle curve to it, not as obvious as say the Albacore's. Having the maximum beam so far forward as on the Russian drawing still seems odd to me, though, I would have expected it say 30% aft from the bow.

It is a bit disappointing that maximum submerged speed is quoted as 20 knots for an optimised hull shape, where the German Type 209 manages 24 knots with a more compromised (constant centre-section) shape. Perhaps it's the Russian batteries?

      Gotland,

I have salvaged my pride enough to continue! Its interesting to read your comments on how things get done over there. Until this hobby started to take off a few years ago, helped greatly by the internet, the Subcommittee and the like, I doubt if there was another model submariner within 600km of me. Now there's one only about 25km away, and another about 150km away. It's getting crowded!

            Yabbie,
            I agree with your conclusions.

I agree with your conclusions. Excelent research work by the way!

Any chance on scannig that "better copy" of the russian plans and post it here?

The Maquette model has some inaccuracies in the fore deck too]

              Gerwalk,

I haven't figured out how to post an image to the message board yet, but if you send me a PM with your email address I can send a scan of the drawing to you directly.

It's a shame the Trumpeter kit is so inaccurate.. not many would have as much patience as yourself to put it right.
