    Simmerring ® and RCABS

    [color=#000000]Hi everyone,

    I'm in the process of building my WTC and, after slowly setting up the equipment tray, it's now time to put on the seals on the propeller shaft and control surface linkages that will keep the water out together with the main large diameter o-ring.
    Unfortunately I can't find rods and/or tubing in the correct sizes to use SubTech seals and anyway it's now very difficult for me to order from SubTech european distributor, PandanModelBoats (there's nothing wrong with the company, it's a personal problem only).
    Now, considering that I'm using RCABS in my WTC]

        I have just finished replacing

        I have just finished replacing the seals in my WTC with o-rings,I am using the RCABS ballast system in my ROG conversion U-407.I don`t know whether the seals failed from mis alignment or the vacume,but everything stayed dry inside till I tryed the airpump in a test of the system,I`m not condemming anybodies product here I`m just relaying my expirence. Maybe I`m having problems due to my inexperience,I don`t know.

          The issue is pressure differential.

          [color=#000000]The issue is pressure differential. RCABS and piston tanks both change internal pressure, and the seal is between the two pressures. Radial lip seals have been good to me, better than I deserved for how I mistreated them. The two most important issues are as follows]

            [color=#000000]Hi Safrole,

            thanks for the reply, it's very useful and it's just what I was looking for. I'm now sure that there will be no problems with the Simmerring and RCABS.

            I've got one more question]

              Why 5mm? Why not 4mm?

              Why 5mm? Why not 4mm? (Maybe you just like that pretty anodized shaft!)

              With the 4mm size, you can use the 4mm bearings they make for RC cars. I used them to support my shafts just inside my new seals. It was very convenient.

              The smoothness of the surface metal and the supply of lubrication will make much more difference than the type of metal. I think aluminum would be fine and the anodization shouldn't hurt the seal any either.

              You can also check out the rotary servo setup I used on my boat, instead of the bellows. One little bad thing is that it puts all the linear force against the linkage seal. The linkage seal is much stronger than the radial lip seal, so I'm not too worried.
