I am brand new to R/C subs as well as the subcommittee.com site. Like all of us here I'm sure, I have a wierd fascination with subs and have always wanted to build an R/C one. I finally decided to do something about this passion and join the subcommittee. (Admin likely hasn't got my application yet. Just put 'er in the mail.).

Up until recently, I felt very intimidated by the technology and "know how" required to take on such a project but have decided that I am a reasonably intelligent person (depends who you ask I suppose) and am quite capable of learning new skills. I am an avid scale modeller but have never attempted an R/C project. I am hoping that with a little assistance from people who know, I will be able to build my Type VIIb U-Boat in 1]

It is generally agreed that the best plans available for the Type VII are those done by Fritz Kohl. This "planrolle" is a series of very large drawings that provide both external and internal arrangement details.

A smaller set of these drawings are also found in the excellent book title [i]Vom Original Zum Modell]. These drawings can be scanned and enlarged quite easily.

Both of these items are usually available at www.amazon.de. Occasionally, used copies are available through our SubSwap forum.

The next best place for Type VII drawings would be the Gerhard Beck drawings. These were available through Taubman Plans Service, which has recently been bought up by Loyalhana Dockyard (www.taubmansonline.com)

Welcome... I take my hat off to anybody who has the skill, knowledge, and ability, to start from scratch on a U-boat project. I know I would not want to start that undertaking. Either I'm a lazy old dog, or too old to learn new tricks. I don't know? However, if you decide to look for a U-boat kit... In my humble opinion, the Type VIIC kit from OTW (www.otwdesings.com) is one of the best. The 1/32 scale hull (in the 7 foot range) is highly detailed, and the photo etched brass deck is excellent. The tower is available in the standard early War configuration in brass, or fiberglass. There is also a new late tower configuration and deck with the schnochel and Anti-aircraft modifications.

Its all in German with metric measurements, dated 1940's. It has top view, side and sections, plus other details not normally seen. The section sheet is packed 50+. Christian-Schmidt

JWL, I tried looking into that site you mentioned but it's in German (go figure, for a U-boat). Problem is, I don't speak it. Haven't had much luck doing a Google for Kohl Planrolle either (English is the only language that I can "kind of" understand).

JWL, These large Kohl drawings that you mention seem to be what I would be looking for. I found some type XXI stuff but no VII. Can you provide me with any more information on how I can get my grubby hands on these Kohl drawings ?

Fall is in the air (it was today anyway), which, as we all know, leads to winter, which is "toy building season". (We have a long "toy building season" up here in Canada). I hope to locate some plans fairly soon.
