Magnetic switches

Hello all.
Does anyone besides engel manufacture or retail a magnetic switch (for reciever use)?
Engel have limited (if any) stock, and my local shop says they cant get any. Or any switches either!!

Thanks in advance,

Paul.

Oh, and hopefully I shall be publishing (on net) details/plans of my now sucessfull diy store WTC in the near future.

Hi Paul]www.rentron.com) they has a "car alarm" type switch! It is a small pocket/keychain type wireless transmitter and receiver board with a relay on it.

Why not just wire in

Why not just wire in a reed switch in series with the battery. You can get these from almost any electronic supply house. It might be a good bit cheaper too. It will do the same thing as what link that you posted but it will not necessarily have all the bells and whistles, but it would serve as a good remote switch. Reed switches can be found as normally open or closed.

Thanks Adam,
presumably the magnet will need to remain in close proximity to the switch - as it will revert to its normal position.
That said is it possible to rig up something that will remain 'on' (normally off) until the magnet trips the swtch back to the off position?

Paul.

Reed switches require that the

Reed switches require that the magnet be held in proximity for as long as you want the switch effect to be ongoing. Thus if the switch is normally open, when you move a magnet closer the circuilt closes, while on a normally closed switch when you move the magnet close the switch opens. So you'd need to have a holder of some type to hold a small magnet in proximity to the switch. Reed switches are the kinds of things that alarm companies use for the magnetic detection switches on doors, etc.

As a kid I took one purchased at Radio Shack apart. It was a Normally Open switch; it's just two leafs of thin metal mounted in a glass vacuum tube. When I moved the magnet close the leaves would touch, completing the circuit.

Thanks Robert, I cant believe

Thanks Robert, I cant believe I have been so stupid - a bit of tape will hold the magnet in place! Now I can apply a large dollop of silcone grease to the wtc seals and leave well alone!

Thanks everyone.

Paul.

I'd be a bit worried

I'd be a bit worried about tape loosening when wet?

You could just glue/screw on a piece of metal over the switch then slap the magnet on that, but you'd have to be sure that the magnet still had enough force while attached to the metal plate, and also that the metal plate doesn't get so magnetized that it affects the switch when the magnet was removed.

One option I don't see

One option I don't see offered for consideration would be to combine the two reed switches with a 'latching relay' and a power source to throw the relay (usually 5-12vdc, basically your required 'coil' voltage).

The two reed switches are mounted in your WTC as far apart as needed, when they are temporarily energized with the magnet, they throw the relay. Capacity would only be limited by the current max of the relay contacts.

I built one up to see if it worked, but have yet to employ it in anything yet. The relay itself is kinda meaty compared to the comparatively compact Engel units, but has a higher potential current capacity.

I'll try and get a picture (+part numbers etc) to follow this post up with....

Anyone know the Radio Shack

Anyone know the Radio Shack part numbers for these reed switches? I don't know anything at al about electronics so what does"normally open/closed" mean? I'm thinking that the one to use would be the one that turns the radio on when the magnet is removed from the outside of the hull.

Thanks,
Mike

That is just the same

Paul,
That is just the same setup the I`m using in my ROG conversion to contol the whole system.I got everything that I needed from ALL ELECTRONICS CORP. www.allelectronics.com.I bought 2 of everything, for extra parts or next sub.The Proxmity switches are waterproof and the you can pick what ever magnet that you think will work.I glued the switch to the side of the hull and use the magnet through the bass deck to turn everything on and off.I glued a very small piece of sheet metal under the deck for the magnet to hold on with and it controls the switch by removing or placing the magnet in the rite spot.Cost $4.50 material,$6.00 shipping. Radio Shack couldn`t come up with nothing this simple.Shoot me your address and I`ll send back some picts,as I don`t know how to post them here.

Hello,
Go back to ye Bible

Hello,
Go back to ye Bible of Submarines, He sayith. Ah erm, I've misplaced mine for the moment. Robert Brunggen's Submarine Technologies has the double reed setup Mr. Munger was refering to. This setup lets you touch one place to turn on and touch other place to turn off (with magnet). I scrapped a double reed setup out of an old tape phone message machine. Plus, if you go the single reed method, you can scrap an automotive relay/solenoid]
