    Detail on XXIII

    Hello,from Portugal

I´m needing some help detailling my OTW Type XXIII.

First I would like to now if anyone can tell me were to find 1/24 sub hatches and periscopes as most acurate as possible.

Second, how can I made rivet lines in this sub similar to the ones done by Dave Basden (you can see is model in the photos/military submarines). Is he a member of this forum? How to contact him (is making me jealous). The lines seem to be made of fine straps of plastic glued to the model. Here to find this straps and what kind of glue is used.

Third, can anyone post some photos of yours type XXIII.

Thanks, and sorry for so many questions.

    hello glad to here from

hello glad to here from some one across the pond
here is a method to produce the detail you want.draw the lies on the hull show your plans or what ever drawings you are using.
1 use styrene strips from evergreen or plastruct .010 wide by .005 thick. you will have use a use medium setting CA gluenot not use accellerator, this will give you more time to align the strips then use Q-tips (ear swabs) to clean up the excess glue. Oh you must rough up the surface of the model before this with 400 grit paper. when you have all you weld lines in place and they are dry then you can use a pounce wheel to simulate rivets this is a handleed tool with a disc on then end that has spikes and you roll the pounce wheel along the strips to get rivets. (micro mark tools)

      [color=#000000]Hello,
I´m glad for your answer. It realy helped
Tell me the mesures are in milimetres (1 milimiter/0,5 milimiters)right and what do you think on the use of CA glue underwather. Somewere I read that underwater the CA is not the best option.

          Helderluiss,

Very nice boat! Does it use the OTW drive and ballast (water pump)system? Or did you custom make your own? Your videos are the best of this boat that I have seen anywhere on the net.

How long did it take you to finish the model? In most of the videos the boat is moving very slowly...What is the boat's flank speed? Can it at least travel at a speed equivalent to a fast walking pace?

The video of the schnorkel, scope and loop anntenna raising and lowering looks almost like it was done via stop motion animation... I assume those are set up to raise and lower via transmitter control, correct? I see the torpedo doors open, do you have functional torpedoes inside the boat?

That is a really a cool boat! And I will probably have more questions for you in the future

          Steve

            Warpatroller, the boat is all

Warpatroller, the boat is all Otw including the ballast. The top sped is only a little more faster that the one show in the video and it take me 23 months to finish.

Yes, the periscope, antenna and snorkel works via transmitter, one proportional channel for the scope and another also proportional channel for the antenna and snorkel. The torpedo doors also work but I did no yet decided if I put the torpedo's since it will change the equilibrium hard to gain in this model, also the space is almost all taken. Maybe in the future, lets see.

                Wow! 23 months...must have been

Wow! 23 months...must have been quite a project! Seems like a very long time, were you working on it mostly off and on during that time?

If the top speed is only a little faster than shown in the video, maybe it could use a more powerful motor and or reduction gear setup? How much does the boat weight out of the water? It should be about 54.4" long and 1/25th scale. OTW used to state that it was 1/24th scale on their website, but after I contacted them (being the Type XXIII geek that i am), they changed their posted scale on the site to 1/25th.

Do you have video of the lights in operation? There is a recessed red and green light on either side of the sail....is there a white light on the rear of the sail somewhere? Not sure if the XXIII had a rear navigational light or not..

My only critique about your current videos is that the boat is way off in the distance most of the time. We rarely get to see it running up close with the boat filling the screen (I am referring to the lake videos).

A video of the boat running at flank speed and submerging and surfacing as it is under way would be very cool...(hint, hint) Also have the camera zoomed in so the boat fills most of the frame. Shots of it running at speed with the schnorkel and scope breaking the surface of the water would be great too, so we can see a wake behind the masts.

Pretend your KapitanLeutnant Klusmeier in U2336, your sailing in the Firth of Forth off the coast of Scotland and it is May 7th 1945...your stalking the last two victims of the Battle of the Atlantic (two British freighters)! Your out to prove the new tactics and capabilities of the latest coastal elektroboot, even though your Fuhrer has had his last meal of cheese ravioli, been dead for 7 days and the war is lost...just forget about that part You've been running submerged for a couple days and you never got the radio message to surrender...and frankly your just aching to try out the firepower of your new elektroboot!

More XXIII uboat theater would be wunderbar!!

                YA YA!! MORE PLEASE!!

                  Yes, it take a eternity

Yes, it take a eternity but because other projects have been put between this one

The speed does not bother me, in contrary, I like this way, it gives more realism to the boat. About the lights, the sail as one red and green in the sides and a white in the back.

About the videos, as soon I put the sub in the water again I make some huge macros for you with all the functions on it

Also I must get a better camera men

I have a Type XXIII as well I build in the mid 90s. I want to update the paint and add to the detail. Where did you get your hatches snorkel, periscope etc.

On another not was you sub from the past as well. I don't know how long 32ed parallel has been out of business. Or has someone take over their designs?

I think that the speed that you operate your XXIII is PERFECT as it looks to be to scale. Your sub looks like it runs very nicely. That surface boat is a nice touch to the videos.

What a great job on an awesome looking and running sub.
