]http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_razz.gif[/img] HI EVERYONE
has anybody worked with the Robbe type XXI sub kit?
i have a chance to get one and was wondering if it is any good
THANX IN ADVANCE
You can ordern Stablit express glue through Ships n Things or Direct from Robbe.
I used plastic weld for most parts and added a fillet of 30 minute epoxy for added strength. For example; when attaching the outer skin to the frames, I brushed in plastic weld and followed up with slightly thinned 30 minute epoxy allowing it to run freely down the joint. Once the structure was togather I used automotive "bondo" type filler to fair in all the joints.
The equipment tray will require quite a bit of extra bracing, especially at the root as it attaches to the aft bulkhead. I laid strips of carbon fiber on the tray with 30 min epoxy. also I braced the entire tray structure with a 4-40 threaded brass rod on either side, which I sunk into the aft bulkhead, extended 1/3 down the length of the tray and secured with 30 minute epoxy.
be sure to rough up any area you plan to glue with epoxy to give additional "tooth" for adhesion. The Tray is the "Achilles heal" of this kit, brace it up and save yourself heartache later.

I always use thick CA to tack the parts in then check for proper alignment and brush on the stabilt or marine grade epoxy the stabilt stuff it great but a little goes a long way if you use a lot in one area you need to let stand for at least 2 hours. this doesn't mean you can work on the kit just be prepared to allow for this drying time
there is one thing wrong that I found the directions and plans show the aft upper hull with a scoop combing on each side in the wrong way. simply turn then around so the open end is facing aft
If I can help with anything then give me a yell
so... I guess I'll ask the dreaded question, how much assembly does this kit require? or how complete is the hull out of the box?
I am asking not so much about the difficulty of assembly but more the time required to get this thing "out of the box & into the water"
I guess that wasn't so bad for my first post huh?
Thank you,
Harry
OK, Nevermind ... chalk it all up to newbie haste! I have found some great "build up" pages here! Though I am now wondering about reenforcement of the hull & fittings & what products to use. Are there any more suggestions as to strengthening the bulkheads? I have used fiberglass & epoxy in my Dumas akula to stiffen it up & it seems to have worked well, but are there superior products for this kit?
Thank you,
Harry
