    First build

[color=#000000]Hi all, I am planning on starting my first build this summer, and am looking for some input. I have never built a sub before, but I do have some RC experience. I first thought about going the easier route of building a static dive and so on. However, after looking into it some it doesn't appear that the middle of the road boats that are static dives are that difficult. I have 2 that interest me.

    For a first build, I

For a first build, I would recommend you purchase a complete kit, rather than go the route of 'pick and mix' wtc and hull.

There are a few more variables to consider when matching a WTC to a hull, which could catch out the unwary or inexperienced. I wouldn't like to see a potential member to the hobby discouraged at the first hurdle.

Either of the boats you mention would make an excellent SECOND boat.

Take a look at Dave Manley's range at Small World Models.

      How about a Thordesign Alpha

How about a Thordesign Alpha thats made to fit the WTC.
Specifically because I love the look and its a little bigger at 44 inches. Or is there another Alpha, Akula, or Typhoon that is a more complete out of the box design, not including the Dumas.

Oh and with the Thordesign or any for that matter the video that Dave has for assembly looked like it should be a great help.

andy is right thor boats will make a second boat,
however I reccomend reading as much about building a sub as you can simply submarines is a great book it covers several model types and gives a look into how things work.
but ultimately its up to you and your desires, what ever you choose this is a great place to get help

          If the Thor Alfa class

If the Thor Alfa class is designed for a D&E miniatures WTC to drop in, then I guess it's on an equal footing with the SWM kits.

Likeing the subject you are modelling is a great motivator when starting the project.

A good quality complete Typhoon kit is available from Engel.

Engel boats work well. They do require a little more work in fitting out than the other boats mentioned, but I think a beginner with a build or two of other kinds of marine models (non submarine) could tackle it without too many difficulties.

Note the hull shape isn't as accurate as the 1/150th scale boat you mentioned.

I believe that Engel boats are distributed in the US by Subconcepts-

          http://www.subconcepts.com

But you can also order direct from Engel in Germany, I think. This MAY save you some money, but you may also wish to benefit from some after sales advice, which I think will be easier from a home supplier.

If you decide to go direct, then buy with confidence from Engel- they are very professional with their dealings.

              Craig O'neal is building one

Craig O'neal is building one (Robbe XXI) and he says it is quite simple. (Of course Craig is a very experienced RC modeler) It's a nice big boat too.

Here is a shot I took of it at the SubRon6 Winter Funrun when it was in the mid-construction phase back in February.
