D&E underwater camera housing results - This is just way too cool....

Finally got some video shot with Dave's new offering now that the weather's cooperating again. I went out yesterday to the local lake and took some shots. I'm extremely impressed with how well the system works and how perfect the video quality is.

Dave sells the watertight housing and full instructions on how to modify any of the many R/C camera systems you can get on the 'net nowadays. The kit consists of acrylic tubing, machined lens, faired endcap, and antenna fairing.

The video that you can view here has been severely chopped down in both length, size, and resolution in order to save on bandwidth, but you'll get the idea of what I can do.

More fun is in the works, as I only had an hour to play, but this was a great start]Nautilus Camera Test (.wmv format, approx 10.75Mb)[/url]

Historically I've been very unimpressed with the sub video stuff I've seen. I am now officially impressed.

            Don,

Thanks for the praise, but credit for the housing goes completely to Dave Merriman (not Big Dave, though he's another talented modeller as well).

Oh, and about the trees... Victoria, BC is green all year

              Is the rod extended an

Is the rod extended an antenna, a mounting, or both? It must be an antenna to project up broaching the surface for clear transmission. That would then mean it has a wireless transmitter. Like the size. It might have to be a very big model, but imagine if this camera could be mounted in the teardrop towed array housing of an Akula? That model location would facilitate a good view of both the sub, the surroundings while looking forward.

Imagine such a device in the lower hull fairing in an NR-1? With the camera laid horizontally in the lower hull fairing, the lens forward looking into a prism angled directly downward, the image then would then be reflected off a small mirror to pitch the image fore and aft along a 180 degree arc operated by a mini-servo. The double prism/pitching mirror combination would also eliminate any upsidedown video image too. To change camera direction, you simply steer the sub.

To view an underwater 'target' on the bottom (in clear water), use two simple laser pens angled to come together at some predetermined point, this to allow the sub driver to gaze into the water to see exactly the point the laser spots (and the camera) is pointing, and is also a way to determine visually depth (or rather 'altitude' over the surface bottom). Geeze...I must have been watching 'The Dam Busters' movie too much! Love that film!

My appologies to Mr. Merriman. I got my Daves confused. As you said at least the one I had him confused with is a talented modeller as well, That should'nt get me scoulded too bad.
I also just got a geography lesson.

Well here's my video I did with a Dumas Akula months ago now. I don't think many of you have seen it. so here it is again.

My pool is a bit cramped to say the lease but you'll get the idea.

If you have seen the Kilo underwater video let me know and i'll post it here.

I'm using the same system as Bob's I got from Merriman. The outside shots where done using the same camera attached to a pole.

                    Steve

http://sneill.com/akula/akula_3.wmv this is a full screen video so I hope you have broad band.
