    Cut the wire and install

Cut the wire and install it using a threaded rod just as Jeff suggested. Running the antenna any other way is an open invitation to a leak which will run direct to your reciever by cappillary action. I have experimented with nearly all the suggestions posted and found the threaded rod to be the best solution. A small change in antenna length won't hurt your receiver. I have lengthened an antenna by as much as 1 1/2 ft for a whip (salt water ops) The radio Gurus said this would destroy the tunning of my receiver, as usual "the numbers" have lied. It works great and has for over 3 years.
    Take Care,
    Steve

      I use a bolt instead

I use a bolt instead of allthread rod- the slotted head makes it a breeze to screw into a tapped (threaded) hole in the end cap.

Have a nut on the bolt screwed all the way up to the head.

Then screw the bolt into the endcap leaving 1/2" or so sticking out.

Cut the head off with a Dremel cutoff wheel.

Unscrew the nut right off the cut off end - that "refreshes" the threads.

Note - although electronic purists shudder - I use stainless bolts and nuts. It seems to conduct the electrons just fine and I don't have the corrosion problems as on brass, even on studs carrying 12 volts.
