Thor Permit Hull assembly - How to?...

    Hi Guys,

Here`s a newbie question for you vets out there...i`ve bought
my first sub (permit sub from thor) a few months ago and i`m in the process of building the hull using thoses fantastic step by step instructions that Matt Thor has on his website...my question is this, what technique do you guys use to keep the top and bottom halves of the hull together? Do you guys use screws? if so, where?

    thanks a bunch!

    that is a good question
    and

    that is a good question
and there are several methods to consider
1 cutting the bottom bow off (about 3 to 4 inches) and glass that to the upper hull and cut the last 3 inches off the top hull and glass that to the bottom hull, then make a index lip for the aft top hull and one for the bow bottom hull so all that is needed is a small machine screw 4-40 is perfect at the bottom hull and maybe a bras tang to engage the top at the aft end.

2 cut off 4 inches at the bow upper hull and 3 inches at the aft end and glass these to the bottom hull and then glass ina bulkhead at each cut off of the top hull that can hold indexing pins ocatches or what have you this method does have one drawback the section of removable hull now has a tendancy to move laterly and it looks very unsclae like

3 cut the aft 3 inches off the top hull and glass it to the bottom hull and make a indexing lip that the upper hull rests on and one small 4-40 screw is all that is needed however sometimes this setup will require an additional screw in the bows holding both top and bottom together, if done properly it is un-noticable. this is my perferred method as there is less glass work.
whichever method you chose there will be a small amount of cosmetic work to close up the gaps.

      I built one of the

I built one of the PERMITS last year. At I use a fiberglass tab and a stainless steel machine bolt. At the rear of the removable upper hull section, I glued a fiberglass tab on the inside of the hull; the tab extends out about 3/8 inch to engage the rear section of the upper hull that is glued to the lower hull. At the bow I have a screw tube and nut assembly to secure the hull. The upper hull has a piece of brass angle glued to it, I soldered a nut to the center of the brass. The brass angle was cut about an inch longer than the hull width. I cut and bent two 1/2 inch ears at the end of the brass angle; these ears are glued to the hull with resin. I made a similar brass angle for the lower hull; instead of a nut, I soldered a piece of brass tube to the angle. The tube is bigger than the head of my bolt. I drilled a clearance hole through the angle for the bolt, the bolt head rests against the angle. The tube goes thru the bottom of the hull, and is cut flush with the hull.
