    Ballist system? - Trim tanks?

Hello everyone! I was just wondering, is it posible to build a sub that has one main ballist tank, and one or two trim tanks to trim out the sub at the lake before running her? I'm talking about one of the biger models like a 1/96 scale Ohio class sub. I'm just looking to hear ideas. Thanks,

    What you are talking about

What you are talking about is a hybrid system. It's been done many times in the past.

One of the best implementations is using a compressed air system for main ballast tank, and a small piston tank or two to trim the boat underwater.

With this system you get the safety advantages of a compressed air ballast system with the fine control offered by a piston tank.

You could also use a water pump system and piston tank.

The main disadvantage with a hybrid system is cost and added complexity. I think that is why most people and vendors stick with a single ballast tank solution.
