Small 2 channel RC car (think outside the box)

today I went shopping for a small radio and all the goodies for the little S100 conversion; well I have had my eye on a small car sold by Radio Shack; I've stopped and looked at it a few times; but she always said it needed charging up (every time)
These little gems are called XMods; they have a 23000rpm motor; fully controlable; and fully prop steering; the whole car is just 5" long and uses 4 AAA; the trans uses a 9V pp9 battery; I took a chance and bought one; the girl said; if it's not what you need bring it back (how could I lose)

So I ripped the batteries out of a remote for the TV (just could not find any AAA new)
I had the PP9 (smoke alarm backup)

Now; I had to assemble the little car; took maybe 10mins then powered everything up
Hit the trigger and off it went in my garage; open the door; out it went; right to the end of my driveway (about 50ft easy)

So the pool is 40ft long; so range will not be a problem
The car zipped along quite well; but remember it has a reduction gear; plus the reduction for the diff (yes it even has a small diff)

So if we think of the motor driving the little S100 prop i made; the batteries can then be rechargeable NiMh; a small mount fabricated to mount the motor; the receiver has the VS built in; the arial is very small too; and would be easy to hid
We have a ready to install 2 ch and it was only $69.99 CND
So lets expand on this; if you needed to make a verysmall sub; made it just flaot and set the dive planes down a tad; would a 2 chanel not be enough

My original Kilo was done this way with a AM radio on two channels.. BTW.. I own a XMOD 65 Mustang and that car is a hoot to drive!
a small sub only needs forwards to get going if it sit low enough to the water line or deskline in most cases..

      The insides; a small pair

The insides; a small pair of bushings replaced the partof the chassie that holds the heatsink against the Motor control IC's

That servo needs longer wires to get it more centered in the boat; the RX antanna is very short; would be great for a simple sub

I tried the setup out of the car with an AC RX battery pack 4.8v; runs stronge

        I needed some tiny highly

I needed some tiny highly flexible wire; so i cut the lead off a mouse; good source of parts are mice

Now i can put the servo anywhere in the boat; I also did not like the slop in the output shaft and made a extremly small and thin shouldered bushing to correct this; it still turns fine but now has zero sideways play; there is not a lot ofrotation to the output arm; I'll add a longer arm to the output to attuate the rudder

          Removed the brass gear from

Removed the brass gear from the motor shaft; and powered the brass prop in water with just 4.8volts; this boat may even get on plane; not only is the motor well suited to the prop; the control had the prop just spinning about 200rpm; nice for docking etc
The radio was the wrong way for the motor cntrol; but you can quite easily get the connector apart (RX end) just press the tabs down and pull the connectors out; replace opp way; done

The boat is a tight fit for even 4 AA across; so one of those flat long packs might need to be used; to keep the CG down low; the motor is now off the RX assembly (just 2 screws)
I want to be able to position it low; this will also get the RX pack down too; just a silicone tube will connect the propshaft to the motor
This is really progressing fast; wish the pool was not a frozen block of ice

            I love this kind of

I love this kind of projects. Have you seen the RC Tiger tank at Radio Shack?. I bought one for just 20u$ (it was on sale) It's a beauty and I don't think I will dissamble it but it has a proportional speed (back and forward), it rotatets like a real Tiger (one track stops while the other runs), rotating turret (left and right), fires the gun (led) and even recoils and fires a machine gun (just sound) I see a lot of possibilities in this system too!!

Keep us informed about your progress!
            Thanks

              The motor mounted in the

The motor mounted in the S100 I used a small brass mount at the shaft end; and parts from the car at the back; remove the 2 screws and it falls out
As you can see the motor is already capped for noise in the RX; this could not be simpler

The prop; it's not offset; the camera did that (angle)
The bit of modeling clay stops water getting into the hull "temp" I will be making a new brass skeg; and it will carry the end ofthe propshaft and the single rudder; i'll not be using most of the parts underwater from the model as they will just be drag

That tank would be in pieces here for sure by now; LOL

                RX is now in and

RX is now in and quite well mounted; it can be removed with just 2 screws
The switch is now on top and will be just under the mount of the 37mm flak; I'll actuate it by a small pull-push rod in the transom
The skeg is soldered and now needs to be shaped to fit the hull and mate with the prop at the right angle
It will also help carry the single rudder
For what i have spent; this isa great little project

                  I just bought the same

I just bought the same boat over the weekend, this is the same S-100 from ROG that I wanted for Christmas and nobody had this in stock! Thank you Hobby Lobby!

Started working on it over the weeknd when I hit the brick wall with the subs, so I started work on the S-100 boat..
I have some 3 bladed props that are plastic that should work fine..
