    Trumpeter/MiniHobbys Wilhelm Bauer and U-2518

I picked up these kits from Lees Hobbys when I was visiting the Sub Museum in Groton and was unhappy to find they do not have the advertized motorization kits in the. They still have the engine and battery WTCs but not the motor and related wiring etc. I would like to pull this together separately and wonder if anyone who has/had these kits could give me an inventory of those components.

Has anyone RCed them? Any thoughts on the kits themselves?

    Thanks

    I have one of course.

I have one of course. I plan to throw out all their junk. As Turbocat will tell you it just doesn't work.

After the 598 I plan to get to it. It's a nice looking boat. I figure it will be fun to come up with a mini WTC for it.

      If you want to use

If you want to use thier stuff you need to come up with a 280 motor. However, a 1.5 inch O.D. WTC will fit inside the hull nicely with removing some of the braces. Don't remember how long the WTC is (this kit is in the planning stages). I purchased another XXI kit to get the tower. I think it was a Revell? The one that has the side cut out that shows the interior.

About 4 years ago I got my first trumpeter kit, I think it was the Wilhem Bauer and a revel of German XXI, the funny part was the ROG model got broken very badly after it was motorized so I took the deck off and fitted it to the Trumpeter kit..
the Battery compartment leaked very badly and it sank to the bottom like that(SNAP!). so I siliconed the motor end up ran the wires to a pill bottle and ran it off a 9v battery...
I had planned to RC one of the boats when the electronics got small enough to work with one.. I think that day has came, right now funny thing was I had drilled holes back then to make this thing work

                    Hi Mark

No it will be RC first; then rebuilt to museum standards; and then donated

even at 1/48th scale it's not really bigenough to fit into; the fighting bridge would be where you head would need to be; and it's not big enough
Maybe at 1/24th scale it could work; but wuld still be a close fit
The motive power for this puppy is going to be massive
here is a propshaft support and one of the props; the fret is one from the Tamiya kit; look how small the props and supports are

I'll stick with my small RCbattleships and cruiser
Which reminds me I have the Prinz Eugen 1/400 scale and I think I now can finish it as RC since most of the weight will be from the batteries.

Mini Hobby Models is the old Trumpeter brand, it's not surprising that you'll find thick scribed lines, rough plastic, thick sprues bla bla bla.. I suggest trying out the newer "Wilhem Bauer" kit from Trumpeter, or the one from Revell.

I have a nice barrel set avail for that kit; in fact most kits
                            www.modelbarrels.com
look on the list in the ship page

The yamato will be 18ft long 32inch beam and displace about 1200lbs; planning on 4 motors with 3/8" diameter SS shafts supported on ballbearings; that prop is one of 2 masters that are CNCcut from D2 toolsteel; i tried one in the sink and drenched myself
