    anyone ever tried a rotary airpump

    I'm just making a rotary airpump; or water makes no difference
    The rotor is a pure teflon piece of bar with a 4mm brass inner shaft; the outside is a K&S tube it wll have 2 holes one at each end; they will suck or blow if the rotation is one way or another; i made it one the 4 axis mill; the slot is 1/8 wide 1/2 circle and makes 6 1/2 turns over 45mm; it should pump quite good as it is a very close fit; I still have to add the endcap bearings; I'll take some pics soon; i was just wondering if this had been tried before

    It works with water; next I'll try to blow up a small ballon





    pumped model aircraft fuel no problem also

      nope the clearance is too

      nope the clearance is too big for air; i'd have to make the teflon fit within 0.0005"; right now it's about 0.0015; and that is just too much; also it has a tough time to self-prime; however if it was in water and had positive pressure pumping in or out would not be a problem
      well that was a good experiment for today; did'nt cost a dime; and I had fun; thats a good day

          Yeah i know that; but

          Yeah i know that; but in the industrial world; big compressers are usually rotary instead of piston based

            mhhh.. i could use a

            mhhh.. i could use a couple of those for my caterpiller drive on my typhoon with the right bearing and good motors, it should be fairly quiet

              need to be a bit

              need to be a bit bigger for that

              It took 4 mins 15 sec to pump a liter into a bottle; but strangely enough only 3min 5 sec to get it back out; must be more efficent that direction

                  The RCABS, (Recirculating Compressed Air Ballast System), now uses a very efficient small rotary air pump made by Smart Pumps, #AP-3P01. I started by using a diaphragm air pump from an automatic blood pressure machine, but the rotary pumps are available for under $10. and are very reliable.

                    Interestingly Smart products also have a very interesting water pump called the SP2003-2 which has a 20 gallon per hour maximum flow which will run between 12-24v and draw less than an amp. Sounds like a good basis for a water jet propulsion system to me....
