    Penguin Sub from 1966 Batman

Hello everyone, I'm brand new here and have been wondering for quite a while what type of submarine was used for the 1966 Batman movie. I know they used a model in many shots but the scenes that were close up look like a real sub.

Here are a few Images that may help. I would like to build a model and would like to get one that would be a close start. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I hope that I posted in the right area. I figured if anyone knew it would be someone here
    Thanks
    Andy

    Hi Andy
This is one of my favourite movies, I've tried to share it with my kids, but the camp and silliness is lost on them.

I think that the Penguin Sub is a Type VII German U-Boot. I think a Penguin Sub would look great at a future Sub-Regatta.

Tho' I dont know how efficient those "flipper propulsors" would be.

    Good luck

      Mike,

Thanks for your information and comments. After searching this site and many others, I was guessing that is what it might be.

      Thanks,

          Cheapest route would be to

[color=#000000]Cheapest route would be to modify a Revell Type VII.

If that's too small, then next port of call would be a Robbe U47 kit, which is based on the VIIb.

There are also some other VII kits out there]

              ....where did those 'saddle tanks'

....where did those 'saddle tanks' come from then!

              I'm thinking that it wasn't a U-boat but perhaps a Gato.....

                I reaaly don't see much

I reaaly don't see much evidence of saddle tanks especially the long shot view but I could be wrong frequently am but I strive to get better. the tower is either a IX or it could be a U I WWI ? jeff you have now forced me to get up off my rear and look through my books again so much for a sedantary lifestyle

                  Hi Chuck,

                  ...check out that third

                  Hi Chuck,

...check out that third photo......it's not the same hull profile as a Type IX.

The tower looks like a rough approximation of either a Type II or an early Type VII or Type VIIB.

Also....I seem to remember a shot on the movie that shows an underwater view of the stern of the sub with those ridiculous penguin flippers where the stern planes would normally be. And if memory serves, that stern looked very much like a Gato. Can anyone provide a screen shot of the stern?

                    jeff you really got me

jeff you really got me thinking on this one and Ithink I have come up with the answer

remember the movie enemy below robert mitchem curt jurgen
the sub in that movie has all the same shapes an characterisitics every time I see that movie I say the miniatures show a hull shape of a gato fleet boat with an inaccurate german conning tower stuck on the deck
so check out the movie and see if I am right or at least close

                      Hi Sub com board, I

Hi Sub com board, I am new to this board, And this being first thread for me. The penguin sub, I made a static version many moons ago. Only I did not use a revell type VII, instead I used a Revell Lionfish. The Type VII structure was to slim, I don't believe the sub used in the movie was a real sub but a hollywood mock up, Any way The tower I made by adding a sheilding to the stripped down revell tower. The revell tail was cut off and the new Tail was made entirely of bondo cigar shaped and sanded down. vinyl for the flippers ( could have been made thicker) but in those days (pre internet) the only reference I had of the sub was from rewinding via vcr the flick scenes a few times. I eventually made the model for my kid which he in turn made into a diorama were the sub was entering Gotham harbor. He showed the dio at the 96 Groton subregatta. You can see the model on the following link and dio at the following link.
