    Prop Size - Prop Size

    Hi,

Does anyone know what diameter prop was on the Benjamin Franklin class boomers? I'm working on a 1/96 scale hull from SSY and the plans seem to show a prop about 45 mm in diameter, which is smaller than the one on my Thor Sturgeon class boat that is only 2/3 the size.

    Thanks in advance,

    Use the same exact prop

Use the same exact prop as used on your Thor Sturgeon 637 class boat. They used the same or similar. Both 15 ft diameter, 7 blade skewed back. Only exception being if your a scale fanatic, the Sturgeon's used the same prop but with the dunce cap with the 'point' eliminated, and replaced with a 'bell' shape, the bell not wider than the taper. Imagine a dunce cap with half it's length cut off, and a small concave suction cup on the back representing the 'bell'. This was done to create a low pressure area behind the dunce cap area....to make the wake vortices off the prop collapse behind the prop reducing it's signature against wake homing torpedoes. On the Benjamin Franklin they used the same prop but with a full complete dunce cap as it appears in the Thor kit. An SSBN's mission was first to be never detected in the first place roaming slow and quiet, avoiding all contacts. If wake homing torpedoes were a concern requiring such a fancy dunce cap for high speed evasion scenario as with an attack boat, this same scenario would mean the SSBN mission maintaining stealth had failed in the first place.
