thor seawolf - control surfaces and linkages

I am toying with the idea of tying the outer plane to the inner plane via a pin in a slot to eliminate the jumble of linkages
the pin can be inserted in the inner plane (outer edge) and then grind a tiny shallow slot in the outer plane (inner edge) then one set of linkages moves both sets of planes

does this sound like a good idea or am I blowing smoke

The outer portion of the plane moves. The inner (or forward)portion of the plane doesn't move, it's part of the pivot point for the stern plane.

The Seawolf stern planes are

The Seawolf stern planes are a 3 piece arrangement. The inner part that attaches to the hull is fixed. The main portion of the plane moves as normal, and the tip is a seperate unit which pivots on a different axis forward of the main plane.

Mine are operated by seperate pushrods tied to a mechanical "mixer" forward of the hull seperation point for ease of accessability and to remove the clutter of tierods at trhe cruciform area of the control surfaces.

I tryed it and it

I tryed it and it works fine so now there is only one set of planes linkage I drilled a tiny hole in each inner and puter planes and then glued the tiny pin in the inner plane and the outer plane pivots with the iner one but at a slightly differ ant angle so longer pins were needed I will try to post pics in a day or so I did this becuase I hate all that cramped space to begin with then try to install 3 or more sets of linkages. for get about it

You will find if you do that the boat will handle poorly. Believe it or not, you get more throw when they are connected individually. Dave Merriman and I played with the linkages for months in an effort to get the boat to handle well at low speed. If you do this the boat will wander in pitch like a drunk duck. Trust me! Been there, done that. Hook them up seperately or you will be sorry!

Again, try this at your peril. Dave and I played for months with various arrangements to get this boat to behave properly. Your idea was tried on 2 seperate boats and their handling was terrible. The linkages and throw on each set were all very carefully designed for a specific reason. If there was a way to simplify the appendages and still retain the boats good handling characteristics we would have done it. We did not complicate the linkages and appendages just to make the modelers life ####. We did it out of necessity.
