Academy Type X1B RC conversion - a weekend project

Well guys I was in the LHS getting some brass supplies for my subs on Saturday. As always I look through the plastic models and there it was. Thought two beats. And then I grab it. What the heck it's so cute and after seeing the other success stories I figured it would be a good weekend build while I wait on parts from Radio Shack for my Kilo.

Started at 8 pm Saturday night and by 8 pm today (Sunday) it's ready to paint and all the equipment is in and working.

Battery goes up front and that little black thing is a 5amp ESC. Feather receiver and two hs-81's just fit.

I used piano wire push rods through housing. I greased up the wire where it exits and put a nice bead of silicon over the ends. In the morning when it was dry I broke them free by moving the push rods. Now I have a push rod seal. I've done this in the past as there's really no way to get Subtec seal on this little girl. Works well.

I made a new shaft from brass for the rudder and soldered an arm to it. Pretty basic stuff. I used the rudder control arm that came with the kit and just cut it down.

I used their rubber seal but I silicone it in to the top of the model. The motor area is sealed with silicone but the control area and push rod area in the back is wet. Nose is wet too but there's nothing in there to short out or blow up so who cares. LOL

I went around and sealed everything so that the entire equipment bay is dry.

I also used the supplied 280 motor and their mount since it was very well set up. I replaced the weak rubber tube they supplied to hook the shaft to the motor shaft with Robart retract air line. Much better and won't slide off. You can get it at the LHS. I has a lot laying around from my planes.

Well I can't think of anything else I did special. As a build this little thing is fun. Parts fit together well and this one has the best set up for the motor and prop of any of the motorized sub kits I've seen to date.

I'll post pictures when I finish the paint job and weathering. Then video of the sub in operation in the old pool.

    This will help better explain

This will help better explain how I sealed the motor compartment.

The white line running around the base of the motor compartment is where I placed the silicon to seal the compartment. In fact I glued the entire back section on this way. Should I ever need to replace or service the motor it will open easily this way.

          Good looking sub!

We have found that a NiMH 9 volt battery will power the sub for about 10-15 minutes and fits in the front compartment. The only drawback is that the stock rubber tube coupler can't take the power. I replaced it with a u-joint driveshaft from Hobby-Lobby. A quick and fun little sub.

Thanks guys. It was a lot of fun to build and quick.

Gunter thanks for the tip. I plan to use a small 280 Mah nimh pack I have here. 7.2, 6 cells. Should give a bit more run time.

I replaced that rubber tubing with vinyl tubing I use for the air lines used for retracts in my planes. Much much stronger. Hard to get on and off and that's what's needed.

I have those u-joints you speak of maybe I'll give them a try if this fails.

Nice job on the IX sub.
It's nice to see more people converting small subs (kit Bashing).
now how about an artical in the magizine.

Thank you. It's a lot of fun and I like both larger and small models.

I'm not sure what you mean about the magazine write up? Which mag would that be?

                Thanks again,

HS-81's but I had two new ones just laying about. Really the HS-55's would work better and are a lot smaller.

On the RX I'm using for testing in my pool only, a Hitec Feather. I'll have to get a micro ground RX before I take it anywhere else.

                        Well I'm happy to report

Well I'm happy to report the little sub works great. You don't need anymore down in the elevator than the original set up calls for. The forward dive planes are set just right straight out of the box.

I did remove some of the inside portion of the elevator to allow for more travel.

I used the weights that came with the kit in the same area's as the plans call for. To my surprise the little boat sat perfect in the water with a 6 cell 280 nimh pack in the forward section of the removable lower section of the hull.

This boat at full throttle is fast. It just takes a little down elevator and she's under. Handles better under water it's a lot like the dumas Akula.

At first the water tight section wasn't so. So I greased the removable section and added more silicon to the rubber gasket that comes with the kit. Then I placed the bottom section back on but didn't tighten the 4 screws all the way down. Let it cure and then tightened down. Bingo. No more leaks.

What a gas it was seeing this little boat go. It just looks great under water.

The 280 pack doesn't last very long. Either it's old as I had it sitting around here forever or it's just not enough capacity. Other than that this was a great and rewarding adventure.

                        Try it! you'll like it!

                        Steve

P.S. I'll shoot some video tomorrow and post it here.

Here's the video's. One is for Broad band. 32 megs. The other 7 megs.

Also here's some pictures from today's run. I didn't re-charge the batteries so it's a short run. I'll get some more tomorrow if time allows and you can see it underwater thanks to David Merriman. Got the WTC and Camera back today.

I need more practice with this little boat but I can do figure 8's if I calculate just right. Under water as well.
