    Sandy and I enjoyed seeing

Sandy and I enjoyed seeing Art in Carmel the last two years that we have made the trip and he was to say the least one of a kind, and we will miss him and his humor. To say he was talented is a vast understatement as he was truly a pacemaker. To his family go our prayers.

      When Chip spoke, everyone listened

      Chip

      When Chip spoke, everyone listened

Chip could have easily been a feature in Reader's Digest "My Most Unforgettable Character." He always had something funny to say and good advice for you on how to make your submarine better.

He was the first one to ever reply to one of my messages on this board. I had asked some brilliant newbie type question ("What submarine should I get?") and he came back with a hilarious reply - not exactly answering my question but quite amusing.

I first met him in person at the SubRon6 meet in Champaign, Illinois in 1999 (above photo). I had no idea who he was, but I noted that all the guys were listening and paying attention to his thoughts on RC subs. I later learned that this was the famous Art "Chip" Meyer and if you ever had a question about RC subs - he could answer it. Of course there was no guarantee that you would understand his answer - not because you were dumb, but because he was that BRILLIANT - "A Beautiful Mind" if you will. But even though he was way more gifted than the rest of us, he never tried to make you feel stupid. In fact, he could always find something to compliment you about, and you never had the feeling he was being anything but honest.

I shared a room with him at Carmel last year and learned that he had a very unusual sleep routine. I woke up about 2 AM to go to the head... I opened the bathroom door and there was Chip, drawing up schematics of how I could fit an inflatable sub rescue flotation device in my Hunley model using a mechanically released butane pocket lighter as the inflator. He had also plotted AND graphed my REMs while I was asleep!

Last winter at the SubRon6 pool run, he had been working on Steve Jensen's scratchbuilt Seehund model and launched it - much to the crowd's delight - using his patented "javelin" method.

Goodbye old friend. You will be sadly missed.

        I would like to express

I would like to express my deepest thoughts and prayers to his family. I have know Art for many year. I have considered him one of my closest friends. For those of us that had the opportunity to meet and know Art should consider ourselves blessed. It is rare in life to meet such a man that was as honest, caring, helpful and always there for you as Art.

I will miss the Emails from him that always had the strangest time stamps. He would be up at 3am and would take the time to send us his thoughts of the day. If you had a problem he would always be there to help.

I once had a problem making a 5" WTC cap and Art drove down with his granddaughter and spent the day with my family and help me through the process. I came to understand that in Art's beautiful mind that his knowledge, skill and experience would never make him a better man than anyone else and he always treated was as equals.

Our group has the pleasure of his company for all these many years. When Art speaks
( "Art-Speak" as we called it ) everyone listened. While there where many who got lost in the technical conversation they all still listened and came away with something in the process. During one of these exchanges I watched as Chip tried to explain the scientific theory on how a WTC, water pressure, electronics all play a part in a problem one of our team was having. Its was so funny to see Art, an Engineer explaining this to a Coppersmith. But in the end we always came away from this for the better and the problem resolved..

My dear friend go with God, you will be missed.

        John
