"The Great Race" Professor Fate sub - looking for reference material

I'm building a model of Professor Fate's sub from "The Great Race" and am
somewhat stymied by the fact that there's only one shot of it the movie!

Progress to date]http://www.artimation.com/Fate/PFSub05d1.mov

More painful still is that I've seen the darn thing in person, at least 30
years ago at that Buena Park museum, but have no photos to show of it. ]

That's superb! http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_biggrin.gif

Are you

That's superb!

Are you building a R/C version, or is it a virtual model only?

Be great to see something like this in the water!

Thanks! For now it's just virtual, but I am building it so it could be output on an STL machine -- "Just in case"

I've put up some more stuff.

REFERENCE contains a couple screen grabs and the Forry Ackerman model.

MY MODEL is, well, my model, and contains a QTVR of the ship as of today.
Click and drag the mouse to move the model around.

Enjoy!

VERY COOL!

I have loved that movie since I first saw it!

Is there any chance you could email me a set of regular blueprint-type views of your FateSub?

I have kicked around the idea of building one of those myself.

Hey Leelan

I would if I could, but I don't really have any such thing, since I'm just carving this out in 3D. I can make you a set of orthgraphic renders when it's done though.

For those interested in the process and progress]http://www.artimation.com/Fate/PFSub05d1.mov

Then I overlaid the rough shapes with a screen grab from the movie (thank to Marty Hart at the widescreenmuseum.com for specification on 1965 Panavision lenses so I could match it) and tweaked everthing as closely as I could to the real deal. That result is here]http://www.artimation.com/Fate/MyModel/PFSub08h.mov

It's a QuickTime VR object movie. This means you can click and hold and drag around your mouse to look at it from different angles.

Obviously I haven't put the rudder framework in yet. That area's a mess and I'm still trying to figure out just what it does!

No problem. orthgraphic renders would be fine.

I have waited twenty years and more so a little more would not hurt.

From the standpoint of making

From the standpoint of making an actual manned minisub like this, the basic pressure hull would be simple. Any metalfab shop that produced propane tanks could make the cylinder and end caps.

One problem both manned and R/C variants would face is the paddlewheels. However, with the right cam-mechanism in the hubs, the blades might actually be made to generate thrust when they should, and alternably return to a zero angle of attack when that was desirable.

I'm not saying the wheels wouldn't still produce a lot of unnecessary drag, but at first glance it looks like they could actually be rendered in a functional form while remaining within the design constraints.

I'd be inclined to make those paddle wheels for show only, and use the small prop for motive power.

Making the retracting periscope and turning front barb/screw work would be fun!

I spent an embarrassing long time trying to match the paddles to the reference photos before I worked out that the blades do, in fact, have a zero angle of attack on the real model.

Of course, now the number one complaint I've received about MY model is the zero angle of attack!

The input and attention is really appreciated. Thanks guys!

From what I've been able to work out, everything (paddles, main prop, nose screw) turn at the same RPM too. Heh.

Hmmm, don't think that would work well.

A prop that small would need to turn pretty quickly to provide any meaningful thrust.

You'd need to cheat a bit there- not that anyone would notice (unless you told them!)

Hello

Professor Fate's "paddle wheel" submarine has surfaced in the upcoming "Profiles in History" Hollywood Auction 96 running from December 11-14, 2018 with a nice off starboard view (which ironically on my 24" monitor is probably bigger then the actual model).

Look for entry "1025. Jack Lemmon “Professor Fate” mechanical submarine miniature from The Great Race. (Warner Bros. 1965)" on page 280 of their Hollywood Auction 96 catalog.

Using the "Flipbook" version: http://www.profilesinhistory.com/fli...dex.html#p=282

If you prefer there is also the pdf version - but be warned it can take a while to load all 604 pages - then go to page 282: https://profilesinhistory.com/wp-con...HollywoodS.pdf

The first and last time I saw the actual model was when I visited Forry Ackerman many many years ago and was stunned by it's small size. Even now just looking at the catalog image I can hear the familiar music and the shouts of Fate and Max...
