alexander engel has some nice couplers that are interchangeable... is there anyone else that already imports these and has these on hand here in the states?

I would try www.subconcepts.com . He is very much in touch with Engels, and sells the kits and parts. Very good to deal with, too.

While on the topic of couplers, does anyone know where I can get some 1/4" universal couplings? It seems the biggest I can find is 3/16".

Not sure about the sizes, but Raboesch has a good line of parts that includes various sized couplers. Ships n' Things is a distributor of their products.

                  i am purchasing a graupner

i am purchasing a graupner single motor dual shaft drive that was for the shark submersible they have...its small in size and will work for my thrusters on my alvin... its around 70 bucks as i recall though....

shafts are counter rotating but i can flip the prop on my graupner nozzles no problem.......

                    Actually I built the gear

Actually I built the gear box myself. I used some gears that I got from an old laser printer and built the frame myself. It really runs nice and smooth. It will however be outside of the cylinder (because it is kind of large).

I have decided to use the one motor and the gear box though, as opposed to two motors and direct drive. I just think it would be a lot simpler (one seal, one cylinder, one central driveshaft, etc.).

How about my other question about the couplings?

                    Jonathan

Can you post a picture of your gearbox? I'd like to see how you did that.

                      Thanks - Jim

This shot kind of makes it look oval in shape but it really is circular. The nylon bearings are adjustable to allow some tinkering to try and get it to run its smoothest. I still have to install the bearings for the central shaft.

This is the small motor cylinder that I am building. The orange strips are adhesive backed silicone rubber strips from McMaster. After wrapping them around the motor, the motor fits nice and snug inside of the polycarbonate tube.

harbor models sells tons of couplers,

his are the type that are made of 3 pieces like a u-joint on an automobile drive shaft. he sells them in parts as well, so you can get a 6mm to 4mm adapter, or a 3.2mm to 4mm for example.

then choose "propulsion", and at the bottom of that page he has stuffing boxes and couplers listed...

                              They are just nylon bearings

They are just nylon bearings from ACE Hardware.
