    Which motor?

Looking for a motor I can use in a 50" boat without a gear reduction box. any suggestions?

Its been so long i've forgotten everything... =)

Also, is there any reason why I could not run all electronics off a 6 volt system, assuming the motor is 6v and the pump for the RCABS is also 6v?

      6 volt will work, but

6 volt will work, but 12 volt is better- less voltage drop, thinner wires and better choices of motor.

You don't state the scale and type of boat. A 50" Alvin is very different from a 50" Type VII.

As a rule I tend to source my drive motors from car breaker yards. Good candidates are heater fan motors, radiator fan motors and windscreen wiper motors.

These motors will swing almost any model size prop direct drive. They draw low current and run smoothly at low RPM owing to multipole armatures.

However they can be quite heavy and/or bulky, so be aware of that.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'm really just trying to squeeze the longest run time out of the batteries. But if 12v works best, so be it. I still have one or two from Merriman WTC's floating around somewhere, with the gear reductions. I'm sure I can mod them easily to fit into my own WTC.

I was looking at my cordless drill. How about a motor out of one of the 12 volt or higher ones? There's got to be allot of these laying around.

            All the ones I've seen

[color=#000000]All the ones I've seen from this kind of source run at high speed and take lots of current. They are not very well made.

If you can find them - multi pole motors with proper bearings are very good (from car breakers or surplus industrial motors)

We seem to be lucky in that we have a supplier of this type of motor (in the UK) - Model Motors Direct try phoning him (UK tel]

              Sorry I just noticed you

Sorry I just noticed you wanted direct drive - ask Model Motors. They did have some car type motors. They also do mostly 12 volt motors also which seem to be best in submarines. (Lower current and ease in providing lower voltages.)

                Yeah, can only agree that

Yeah, can only agree that the drill motors aren't the best way to go.

Those cordless drills sell for what, £20 or less? The company making them is probably making them for about £5, if that. Therefore you can bet your sweet life the motor is going to be a real cheapo!

Buhler, Maxon are great for smaller models. They do make larger motors, but they're difficult to find surplus, and buying new is out of the question (V. expensive).
I've already mentioned breakers yards. I never pay more than a fiver for a motor, and these will not wear out in the application we put them to.

Also bare in mind that you shouldn't run a 6 volt motor on a 12 volt system- they'll have a very short life!

Hey guys..whats wrong with just getting a Graupner motor??? you get a motor (with gear box installed) spec sheet in the box,
and a motor that is made to work at higher power draw than
a sub will ever use?!? graupners are also tryed and true (Daves WTC's) and also a nice compact gear box bolted on the back of the motor. i have a 3 to 1 with a speed 500 and
i can run on and off all weekend on one nickle metal 4500 miliamp battery pack.

Uhm, he said direct drive, and although Graupner do build motors for that application, they're hideously expensive.
