Trumpeter Kilo conversion - static diving this time

Since the VIIc is done I've decided to start the Trumpeter Kilo as my next project.

In order to get the VII to dive I have to have a lot of speed and I'm not to fond of that. So by starting over with the Kilo I can take what I've learned from the U Boat and build a better system. Isn't that always the way?

Then go back and apply that to the VIIc.

I'm going to build another WTC. This time in sections and set it up as a static diver. I got a RC airplane 6-12 volt pump good for fuel or water. So I'm going to experiment with it as a way to use the bladder system as the Kilo is too small for a gas system.

Here's a picture of the pump. I took it apart and will make a new housing for it and test it first. Should work though. I'll hook it up to an open gimbal and be able to pull water in or send it out. The only question I have is should I use a valve and which one to keep any water out as the pump is turned off.

My thinking is that any water that did get past the pump and into the bladder would be very little and I can always pump it out again. We'll see in the tests.

    Fun fun fun.

Here's the conversion of the fuel pump to ballast pump.

Since the motor is a 280 I took some old gear drive had and used the end caps from them Removed the shafts, sanded down everything I didn't need just for the housings.

Then I took a plactic tube that plumers epoxy comes inside. As it turns out it's the exact size to fit around the house from the gear drives. I shorted the shafts on the pump from what they were to compress the size and use up less space.

It works just fine. I'll hook up an linkage from a servo to the switch and I'll have off, forward and reverse. Total cost so far, 20 bucks. It took very little time to do and this is something you can make with all off the shelf parts from the LHS and the hardware store. No to mount on the end caps next.

Progress is slow but it's not like building an RC jet. LOL

I'm learning thanks to you guys and learning quick. This is such a nice break from the years of building jets. A challenge again and a great way to tinker and invent.

Plus no drives to the field never knowing if you'll come home with a plane or a kit. Just step outside to the pool.

Thanks Jeff very much. It will be great to be aboard. The wife sent in the check a couple of days ago.

            Sorry guys for the slow

Sorry guys for the slow build as just after I started it was discovered my wife has breast cancer. This is no fun and it will take a long time to get her well but the doctor says as advanced as it is he can cure it. Or in his words it's treatable.

Now that some of the dust has settled I've started back at the WTC and ballast system. It seems to work very well even without a magnetic valve. A ballon is used within a tank. All the ends have end caps.

Later tomorrow night I'll be able to post some more pictures of the progress but bare with as my wife will need my attention.

            Thanks guys,

            Steve

I hope the best for your Wife, I've lost family in the past from cancer so it does have a meaning to me that somebody needs to beat it.. Tell her to beat it and be mean about it!

And your Kilo should work well if your doing what I think your doing.
Side note about the VII, I'm using your idea on the twin rudders, got parts from a friend today to finish the steering, this is also being used on the Scharnhorst since the setup on her is alittle similar but your idea is not as complex as her's!
I hope to start working on my next VII sometime in Jan-Feb timespan, house taxes coming up soon so I need to make sure we have the money, all projects that needs parts are on hold until then.

                    Mark,

thanks so much for the kind words. This is a tuff thing to got through as I'm just so in love with my wife and have been for over 20 years. But the doctors says it's treatable and she will make it. It's just going to be ruff.

Well I made the WTC today. Still have to slot the other end caps for the o rings. Then install all the guts on the table.

Also I plan Monday to call Mike's Sub Works and get the shaft seals. Picked up a lot of parts today so I have everything toi finsh her off.

The guy stuff on the pump is plumers epoxy putty which made a nice compact bed to hold the servo and the switch that works the switch.

The pump works great and I have enough ballast area to make her submerge.

I've sure learned a lot here and I thank the Sub Committee folks for that.

                      Hi Steve,
You are doing a great job on the kilo. Keep up the good work! Just make sure you leave yourself enough room for your linkages and prop shaft coupler behind the WTC. It gets a little tight back there. I put a new photo on my homepage showing a closeup of the rear of my Kilo. Dave.

                        Dave,

thanks but the inspiration came from your work. So thanks for that it's much appreciated!

Ya I know it's cramped back there. The linkages will just clear the motor WTC if I bend them right. I think my ballast tank is over kill in space but better to have too much than not enough.

Where the heck is your website? Haven't been able to find the link.

                        thanks again Dave,

Well it all fits! Thanks to Dave for the inspiration.

I would highly recommend if scratch building your own WTC is not something you like to do then buy Dave's kit. It's excellent and would make building this little sub go a lot faster.

The WTC is done for now. Yesterday I called up Mike's Sub works. His wife was very helpful with my order of the shaft seals and the prop shaft seal. Since the off the shelf shaft seals they have are 3/16 Mike was kind enough to get on the phone with me and make me a custom shaft for the Kilo. Great prices and great service.

So as soon as I get those parts I can finish of the WTC. All that has to be done now is to add the seals and shafts. I hooked everything up last night and to my surprise all the equipment functioned correctly. Getting those end caps on was a real treat but I finally put a little lubricate on them and it was a lot easier.

They seemed to pass the water test too.

Now I can put the hull together and hook up the dive planes and rudder. Last part is to finish the sub off and paint it. the easy part.

Dave what is the best method to secure the WTC down to the lower hull while still being able to release it to remove the battery end cap?

As far as holding the top section of the hull down I thought rare earth magnets might work well as they hold down the canopies on my jets to make for easy removal of the batteries for charging and don't come off even at 100 mph!

                              Steve

P.S. the break down of the WTC is aft section motor.

First chamber is the pump, esc, RX, and servos.

                              Next section is ballast.

                              Last is the battery bay.
