Revell type VII ?'s - ballast tank or not...

The fact this is a small model to RC, I know many smaller sub kits have been rc'd, do you guys really think a ballast tank is needed? Other than just wanting to design and install one, it should work fine as a dynamic diver. Ray Masons Nautilus comes to mind, along with the well running and diving Krick u-25 Jim Butt built a few years back. These 2 boats were great running and diving subs. I wanted to try this first on my Revell kit. ?, what degree angle on the aft dive planes would you need using only the fwd dive planes to get it under? I Am trying to come up with a simple set up with minimum linkage, (aft dive plane push rod, ballast tank gizmo, etc..). I know the pros and cons of pumps vs gas, vs dynamic... this is a small boat and only would be run in a sub safe enviroment. pool, small clear pond, fish tank, Ooops, just kidding about the fish tank thanks Jeff

    Hi Jeff, I use a

Hi Jeff, I use a ballast tank in my Type V11 WTC design. I used the RCABS system. I was running it for awhile without the tank and trimmed for slightly positive buoyancy. I did not like the speed I needed to make it dive. The Type V11C is one sub that looks great running on the surface at water line. It is very hard to do without a ballast tank. Just my opinion. It can be easily done without a tank, but what fun is that.

thanks Big Dave, I agree, so far my sub fleet has always had gas ballast systems, wish they were all my own ideas, but hey, thats the fun of a club like this. I think I will have to wait to see more and get more ideas for this model. All my subs have been large, over 5' and room was no trouble. The rcabs system is something I have been following, but really need to see one and actually talk to the guy who set it up. thanks Jeff

It would be helpful to see some pictures with detail of how you achieved the ballast tank set up in you sub big dave.

If you've seen my post on the conversion of this boat you can see in the pictures that I have the room.

I'm new to subs as I've been flying RC jets for years. So I'm drawing a blank here with RCABS system.

        Thanks for the help.

            Hi Group,
            In issue #54 there

            Hi Group,
In issue #54 there is a article written by R.E.Suitters
about a Perry Submersible. He used a toothpaste despenser
and a winch servo to make a piston type ballast tank.

If you have issue #54 check out page 20. If I make my
Revell Type VII C 1/72 into RC this is the type of ballast
            tank I will be using.

            Hope this helps someone,

            Darle

Thank you gentleman. It does help.

Although I'm going for dynamic diving I still have room and a channel left over for both types of ballast systems.

I would suppose that some of the sub sites would carry such a pump?

              Thanks again,

              Steve

                Steve,
                If you are asking about

                Steve,
If you are asking about the pump that Art has in
his RCABS system, you may want to ask Art about the
pump. He has a very slick system that he is using on his
                subs.
I plan to install this setup in my scratch built Gato, I like
the simple operation of the system.

I like the ballast system in issue#54 because it is small
enough to fit in the hull of the 1/72 Revell U-Boat and
                get the job done.
