I've seen pictures in the gallery of a piston tank and this provoked the question of where do I aquire the gears for this ballast system.

Is this ballast system hard to build?

Alexander Engle (see vendors' section of this website) in Germany sells the piston ballast, often called the "Engle Tank".

Also check out the book Model Submarine Technology written by SubCommittee member Norbert Bruggen distributed by Traplet publications Traplet Website. He talks about building your own piston tank. Pretty complex but it can be done.
