    Hydrohen from batteries. - Explosive!

    [color=#000000]Dear all,
as we know, batteries discharge an amount of hydrogen during the charging phase. I read about a frenchman whos sub was destroyed by charging his batteries without venting the WTC. That I can live with (i.e. completely removing the batteries from the sub for charging). However, is it safe to house a lead acid battery in the same compartment as the motors (which will cause arcing, and thus we have a recipe for disaster)?

    Thoughts gentlemen please...

      Why would you use lead

Why would you use lead acid instead of a sealed gell cell? Yes that is very dangerous!

[color=#000000]Ooops!!!!! I am using a sealed gel cell (have been a wally again). Okay, do gel cells produce a dangrous amount of hydrogen? Can I safely put it near the motor if I vent it during charging? Don't know why I thought I was using lead acid... Heavy, like lead I sppose.

          Gel cells and lead acid

Gel cells and lead acid are both based on the same technology i.e LEAD and ACID.

Gel cells have extra features to reduce spillage and reduce hydrogen gassing whilst charging.

They should not gas hydrogen but COULD.

IMHO I would not wish to use them/charge them inside a WTC. I suggest that you contact a supplier/manufacturer for a definitive answer.

            I am almost 100% positive

I am almost 100% positive that gellcells are completely sealed, you can even place them outside the WTC. They are safe to use in a sealed WTC, just dont cook em' while charging and you wont have a problem

              This is from a gell

This is from a gell cell battery manufacturer]GEL Cell or sealed lead-acid batteries are frequently selected in applications where batteries cannot be vented or cannot be mounted in an upright position. Gel cells are cleaner in the sense that they do not vent gasses like lead acid batteries. However, gel cells are more sensitive to charge voltage (and cannot typically be charged with an automotive type battery charger) since they cannot vent except in emergencies (which may cause irreversible damage). In addition, the gel cells are much more sensitive to higher temperatures and cannot tolerate being discharged for long periods of time relative to a flooded lead acid battery. Therefore, the charge on gel cells must be regulated properly.

Getting quack to the topic.... (har har har)

Romaine Klassen had an unfortunate incident in regards to this very topic a few months ago.

The torpedoes that he'd made for his Seehund are fully functional (and one is actually r/c'd). He'd just finished charging up the battery and was showing it to a friend who had stopped over when he had a little.. accident.

Turns out the lead acid batteries had discharged a bit of gas while they were charging and when he pulled the switch to kick in the motor and show off his fancy warhead, the entire casing blew up right in his hand. Fortunately he wasn't hurt, but it sure scared the heck out of him. He said it sounded like a shotgun blast.

Moral of the story? Uh... don't do that.
