Need help on hull detail, please - What is this, on the Ohio SSBN´s?

    Hi..

On the rear end of the Ohio hull, extending from the end of the missile deck, and about 2/3 the way towards the end on the port side, is a "tube" running on the outside of the hull. It's oval, and blends in with the hull, has a slight curving following the hull quite nice.

Any one know what this "tube" is? Something to do with the towed sonar? Internal "plumbing" eg. coolong system?

    That would be the towed

That would be the towed array fairing cover.

      G'day,

      It's the towed soanr array

      G'day,

It's the towed soanr array housing. I beleive it extends further underneath the missile deck and comes out the back of the boat where the vertical fins ( end plates) on the Horizontal planes are situated. There are tubes that extend out the end of either end plate. I believe they extend out of these.

      regards,

      david H
